BTW: you should check out the dave larson class (the sabbath school class that deconverted me...) if you haven't already. its in the LLU church bulletin. i believe they meet in one of the conference rooms of coleman pavilion. some of the UC professors attend, so odds are you wont be the only atheist in the room.

hey, enjoy. their album is great, while i liked great cold distance for the individual songs contained therein, and the great production values, and the increase in the tightness of the music in general, I like their new album for different reasons. It is best to listen to the album in it's true form, from front to back, the songs really inform each other, and as a result the album in it's holistic form truly works for me.

Your 3 points were great. I feel the same way. What books do you recommend as an atheist trade-off? I haven't read much, due to mostly reading vet stuff and science stuff for work. What would be your top pick?

Maybe I should tell them that I'll sacrifice some burnt offerings. I hear that God likes burnt offerings. And legs. Maybe burnt goat legs...

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree. I'm starting to consider how to get this done with the least conflict possible. I have encouraged many friends to come out as gay through a letter/writing, That is something I am considering.

Does the fact that they send you religious materials and such irritate you at all? It has always bugged me. Especially when the stuff is so ridiculous and simplistic. One pamphlet actually quoted some words from an Alabama song! At times like that, I am not offended because I am an atheist, I am offended because I am an intelligent, educated person.

Thanks again for the input. I will let you know how it goes. I am due a trip home in the next month or two. Fun!

Theists invalidate their position with evidence

Posted on June 13, 2010 at 2:00pm 4 Comments

I am reading Christopher Hitchens' book 'god is not Great' and chapter 5 concludes with an obvious but, nonetheless, important point.

Actually, the "leap of faith" - to give it the memorable name that Soren Kierkegaard bestowed upon it - is an imposture. As he himself pointed out, it is not a "leap" that can be made once and for all. It is a leap that has to go on and on being performed, in spite of mounting evidence to the contrary. This effort is actually too…

Homer Simpson reveals the nature of faith

Posted on April 22, 2010 at 6:14am 3 Comments

I love The Simpsons for saying what we all want to say, in a way that few of us can. The most recent episode has a line so good I simply had to share it with anyone who may have missed it.

"Faith is what you have in things that don't exist." -- Homer… Continue

Theists: Prove that God loves you

Posted on March 7, 2010 at 2:26pm 2 Comments

Debating the existence of a god with a theist is often a tiresome waste of time. It is sometimes more entertaining to debate specific aspects of doctrine with a theist. One point that I find it interesting to discuss is that of the god's supposed omnibenevolence or love since it is a position which they are unaccustomed to defending.

How do you determine that another human loves you? After much experience to the contrary I could never take someone's word that they really love me even… Continue

My story

Posted on February 25, 2010 at 3:11pm 2 Comments

This is my story. I think it is different than many other people's story so that's why I'm telling it in some detail. It begins in a remote part of northern California where I grew up during the early 70's. Imagine a barely developed countryside with homesteads separated by miles of woodland and connected by a winding dirt road. My nearest neighbors were my cousins who lived about a mile away. Other than my siblings they were the only kids my age I knew until I started school, but I saw them… Continue
