Rape Culture?

I'd like to get people's thoughts on this blog post: disregard the comments following the post--as is so often the case, the discussion there becomes a pissing match, and therefore irrelevant. I just want to know what people think about the initial subject. Does Western culture condone rape, in the…See More

An Unfortunate Film Review

Posted on January 21, 2010 at 11:50am 4 Comments

I hate having to do this.

Defiling the sanctity of something I find precious--fiction. For whatever our beliefs (or non-beliefs), fiction is a personal forum, replete with all the amenities afforded to self-expression. With fiction, it doesn't matter what you believe or think, only that you're honest in the storytelling.

Which is why I find it distasteful to hear myself utter derisive sighs at the 2003 film Saints and Soldiers. A taut, unpretentious, intense,… Continue

I Understand

In the middle of extricating myself from an out-of-control "debate" with an anti-Western America-hating extremist who was a Westerner herself, I realized--though not for the first time--that she and all other extremist ideologues are no worse than their ideological opposition. We were talking about Pat Robertson's idiotic comments concerning Haiti, and the discussion snowballed from there. I had to ask myself "Is she any worse than people like Roberston?" It's no wonder that extreme reactionism… Continue

This YouTube link is a lot lighter than my previous one. It's wonderful and hysterical, so, my fellow secularists, enjoy:

I know that's like a weird of "six degrees of separation" type of thing. But hey...the mind works in mysterious ways :)

Hi Grey,
Thanks for the comments about my blog post on anger. I have had a lot of anger, but am learning to channel it. That way, instead of being the self-rightous victim, I can go on to succeed. It's an ongoing learning process.

Your comments are appreciated.

Hey, Grey. Thanks for posting and welcome. I'm very much a greenhorn here, trying to figure out how to express myself without pissing EVERYBODY off. It's a lifelong problem. Haha. I appreciated your post and hope to see more.

Hi Grey,

Thanks for your comments on my blog post. It's great to find interesting, thinking people on this network.

As for your comments, we are in agreement on most of our points of view. You express yourself well. All of the things that you say make sense to me.

I'm also very uncomfortable with the religious relativists, who pick and choose what they will believe based on what feels good to them, rather than taking a rational point of view. What 'feels good' doesnt leave much room for discussion. It's hard to make progress. But rational discussion - that is where we know that the atheist point of view is right, and can make change happen.

I used to live in Indiana, for a while. Never made it to Muncie - I lived in W Lafayette. It was a hard place for me to live - I did not fit in. It would have taken more strength and courage for me to stay, than leave. I'm glad that there are people there who can be a focus of rationality - if I had found that then, maybe I would have stayed.

Best wishes, let's continue to converse.
