An atheist is someone who believes that nothing made everything.

Hello all:

PZ Myers published a blog about Ray Comfort's latest antics:

Read at your own risk... it contains phrases such as:

"Imagine if I said my latest book came from nothing. Imagine if I say that I don't believe a builder build my house."

PZs comments bring us back to the non-delusional reality most of us prefer, however.… Continue

not so surprised....

I was very excited yesterday, as we all were, it seems, when President Obama mentioned “non-believers” when he listed different types of belief systems that Americans hold. I say excited, but not surprised. I have held a close ear to Obama’s speeches, as he has been campaigning for almost 2 years for the presidency. I have been very aware of the lack of religiosity in his speeches. Yeah, he quotes the odd bible verse every so often, but it’s always relevant to a common moral lesson he is making… Continue

Is it just me (or are applications ridiculous)?

Is it just me or do most of the applications on A|N seem better suited to theists, or 12 year olds, rather than for people with the courage, integrity and intelligence to value truth over fantasy, in a wold filled with the opposite? Actually I don't need to ask, since the installation rates, which are mostly zero, bear this out. Not a big deal, but it is almost embarrassing just scrolling through the list.

Yesterday's inauguration speech was, in many ways, big. Again, Obama spoke to the nation like the adults we are, which is a refreshing change from having to revert one's mind to that of a child, just to be able to figure out what your leader is saying.

The speech was big in another way:

We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers.

What’s different about the “new age" movement?

Bizarre secret cult ripping families apart

“About 20 people have become devotees of a New Age "healer'', Matthew Meinck, who owns a retreat property in Chittering Valley. Meinck, an Australian-born former monk, believes that people retain in their bodies memories of abuse that can be retrieved during intense deep-tissue massage, regressive therapy and gruelling meditation sessions lasting up to two weeks.” However, “During long retreats at the property, they became… Continue

Turkish creationist offering trillions to prove that transitional fossils are real is crazier than the media reports...

A Turkish creationist's stunt contest offering 7.5 trillion lira or $4.6 trillion U.S. is still open and will be for a very long time. But can you expect anything else from someone who thinks that evolution is a Zionist/Freemason conspiracy to enslave his countrymen?

your book vs. my universe, a science writer's statement of purpose

This is a post from my popular science blog, Weird Things which I thought would be of interest to Atheist Nexus's community since I'm trying to summarize the atheist/agnostic stance on life and provide a rebuttal to the theist charge that atheists and agnostics are angry and bitter because we have a very limited worldview. Here's the post in its entirety...

I periodically get asked why I write about creationism and creationists and try to use a scientific battering ram on people who… Continue

It's over....

After 8 years, Bush is gone. Boy what has the Republican Party turned into? I remember a time a guy like him would have just been laughed at. And Palin too. Where did they get her? I guess they couldn't get anyone else to run with McCain. The next few years will be interesting.

One of the things Bush and Company really did was DIVIDE THIS COUNTRY. And boy did they do a great job doing it.

Our country is attacked. Did we unify? No. We just kept being pulled apart. I guess it was the… Continue

Frustrations with finding human rights positions

The past few years, I have had this nagging feeling in the back of my head, lurking around under my thoughts. Hearing more and more about the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and injustices in Gaza lately have brought it back with a raging fury. For the longest time, I have wanted to go oversees and volunteer. To do SOMETHING, with my own hands, to improve the lives of people over there. To help show that not all Americans are rich/rude/uncaring/whatever misconceptions those people may… Continue

The Virgin Mary is SEXY

How hot is the Virgin Mary? Yowza. This is the work of Ricardo Oyarzun, a fashion designer in Chile who wants to dress models in Virgin Mary inspired garb, but sexier. That's not the best part. The response of the roman catholic church is what made me laugh out loud. I quote them and reply over at… Continue

I was born the year George Bush Sr. was elected. Yes, the man who said we are neither citizens nor patriots. So, just to hear our new president acknowledge us felt pretty nice :) a quiet inch in the right direction.

A different book for inauguration?

It is only a few hours after Obama took the oath of office to become the President of the United States. And part of that was that he placed his hand on a Bible used by Lincoln, something which as been pointed out quite a bit in the news with the historic nature of the book has been talked about. Now perhaps it should be that no Bible at all should be used at all, but I was also thinking about it and wondering if instead of just saying drop the Bible something that might be attempted is to come… Continue

Obama inaugurates the return of science

Barack Obama was just sworn in, and he mentioned science within his first few hundred words as 44th President of the United States. To be specific:

Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics.
Here, here! At last we have a national figure who realizes how important it is… Continue

Lost in translation

I am by no means a perfect speller,

Or even great at grammar,

But reading a post written in text-speak

Is like bashing my eyes with a hammer!

Seriously, I cannot be the only one

Who sees are language die

Every time u use u for "you"

and refuse to capitalize an i.

when numbers stand 4 words

and punctuations thrown 2 the wind

i dont no where 1 line ends

n where the next begins...

the overuse of ellipses

can bring… Continue

Inauguration Speech

He said "and non-believers". He said "restore science". And he listed "curiosity" among the core values. A good start.

A pivotal change in history was made in the USA today. A man of mixed race and skin color has been elected as President.

In his inaugural speech the new President acknowledged not only the racial mix of the nation, but the religious mix as well. This included reference to the presence of citizens with no religious beliefs.

In this inauguration the racial mix of the US Nation was acknowledged and peoples of various racial lines and mixtures were given pride of place and… Continue

Banning Australian Topless Sunbathing?

Evidently, some Christian and conservative politicians are offended by women's breasts and want to ban topless sunbathing on Australia's beaches.

My full take on it here.

Did Jesus Exist?

Growing up Catholic, I questioned the inconcistencies of the Gospels, I questioned the rituals, I questioned the statury and pagan nature of worshipping Mary and saints. I never questioned whether Jesus was actually a real person, I just accepted it. Even later at 18, after seeing how completely ridiculous Christianity is, I still didn't question the historical Jesus. Was there ever a Yeshua Ha Notzri, or Yeshua Ben Pantera?

In my mid-20's I read a book about heroes and the hero myth,… Continue
