Another physician displays crippling ignorance about evolution

Pharyngula posted a very good criticism of yet another newcomer to the ranks of the proudly ignorant in an article on OpenSalon's new beta. Hopefully the profound lack of knowledge displayed in the original anti-evolution post is not representative of the clientele in which OpenSalon intends to specialize. The original author of the OpenSalon post appears to be both complimented and annoyed to be… Continue

Pale Blue Dot

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and… Continue

Atheists Don't Believe in God

You know it: I know it, but why don't they know it?  It's pretty obvious that atheists don't believe in God, but for some reason, a fair number of people seem to think atheists believe in God but just choose not to worship God.  While some people who may believe in God may choose not to worship it doesn't make them atheists.

Because I kept bumping into this weird idea that atheists believe in God but have…

Do you believe in luck?

I've found that my belief in the concept of "luck" went away with my theism. Have any of you experienced anything similar?

Merriam Webster's first definition of luck is: "a force that brings good fortune or adversity"

And fortune: "a hypothetical force or personified power that unpredictably determines events and issues favorably or unfavorably"

What IS this force? I think I thought it had to do with god. (Or maybe Star Wars?? tee hee… Continue

What good is History?

I found this today as I was looking for some paperwork. It is a position paper from a History class I wrote sometime last year. Just some food for thought.

What good is History? (A question proposed by Dr. McGee)

This is a simple question, with a complex answer. History means something different to all. History can be something spiritual, rhetorical, and sometimes literal. It is difficult to know who we are until we know who we have been. We all need a sense of beginning.… Continue

The Unbearable Lightness of Materialism

Sometimes theists leave comments on my primary blog, planetologist.net. Recently a comment in response to my screed against Rick Warren prompted a reader - actually not a raving lunatic, rather a pretty calm but (sadly) theist writer - to leave a comment that invoked the M word... materialism. There were also a fair number of "quote me and then argue against my quote" comments, which I find almost as… Continue

Have a listen to "Trees" on my music. It's by the daughter of an online friend and who's as yet undiscovered. Completely unprejudiced, I think it's good.

"Atheism is Irrational," Are you sure???

"Atheism was once defined as a belief that there is no God.

Any such assertion, apart from faith, would require one to be

omniscient, knowing all things.
Atheists have recognized

this definition as an intellectually untenable position and

some have therefore recanted from this view.

An explicit assertion that “There is no God” is now reserved

for ‘strong atheism’.

Atheism has since been redefined as a lack of belief in any

mainstream religion, inc.

The current issue of Christianity Today magazine has an important message for any evangelical promoting the religion. God is not a brand name and it’s important not to market the faith. But this warning is a reaction to the fact that in many ways, religion is a marketing venture for many and Jesus and the Bible are brand names which sell everything from books to divine ponzi schemes.

5 Evil and Crazy christian Movements

christianity drives me nuts. I find it to be reprehensible in most aspects but here are a few issues that top my list at the moment. Please feel free to add to the list, and to include islam and any other religion. I found it overwhelming to even get as far as I did. It's rather depressing how evil it all is. See the list at HDC along with links.

Have a great day, my… Continue

Atheism Means Moral Freedom

Atheism asserts the independence of the individual. It denies the existence of a power, natural or supernatural, which determines human life. For a long time, people have been supposing that their lives are determined by god, fate or natural law. But the daily experience of free will, disproves the existence of any determining factor.

Yet people have believed in the existence of a god etc., on account of their slave-mindedness. Slave-mind seeks a prop, and an early prop it took to… Continue

Christian Cowardice; another myspace repost

At some point I'm just going to go crazy and admit that I'm a Prophet of Apostasy. No, not really, but anyway. I get no traction on myspace, so here this is...

"Obama is the Anti-Christ!!! Don't vote for him!!!" Oops, too late.

Um... Fear-mongering is a good dishonest tactic that Christians should

AVOID. Please, if you want to live under a rock, shut up and go. If

life is too much, head for the hills. Stop voting, tithing, working,

living. You got whipped...… Continue

The Fifth Commandment EXPANDED {invisible on myspace}

This is not for Atheist Nexus, but I might as well. More of my crap rants seem to get read here...

Yes, I'm an Atheist, but this bothers me.

The elderly are not tax burdens.

"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which The Lord your God gives you." (Exodus 20:12 RSV)*

What would Jesus say about the Social Darwinism going on in America???

What would Jesus say about all these disposable people running… Continue

Evalutation Christianity / Science ; a myspace repost

I purpose this as a way to get at the core of these, or any belief system.

This is a three part tool to evaluate belief

systems. It is not the only way to do it, nor the best way...but a

better evaluation tool would include these categories and others...

1. Assumptions / Beliefs / Dogmas

2. Relationship to Evidence

3. Methodologies

Christianity verses Science

Assumptions of Christianity:

Triune Dogma of God,

Triune Dogma of the… Continue

PZ Myers in Calgary.

I recently went to see Prof. Myers speak in Calgary. It was quite interesting I think. There was the requisite YEC passing out misleading papers with "questions" that "Prove" that the universe is less than 10,000 years old. There was one young man who seemed to have taken some offence at Prof. Myers' treatment of religion, he stormed out at the beginning of the question period rather than voice is concerns in a rasonable matter.

These are some of the major points that I took away… Continue

Okay, this guys a real Koran pounding ass hole. Now, his father was a Mullah, his brothers were Mullah’s. They rallied against Saddam and paid the price. Saddam had them killed (wished he'd done us all a favor and gotten junior too, but well, one can only wish..).

Now this guy is the baby of the family. He went off to study to be a Mullah. He didn’t even finish the first part. He quit. But I guess when your dad is a honcho in a… Continue

Continue

Proof God is Real... again...

I found this video on YouTube and 99% of the commenters seem to think this guy is a genius -- I just don't get it. There are people claiming to have been atheist who say this video converted them.

Essentially, he seems to be saying that since he says he can prove that time and matter didn't always exist that something had to have created it. And because things are complex, that proves that the creator is incredibly intelligent. He says he has us "cornered" and that some us don't… Continue

Over The Top? I Don't Think So.

I feel as if Obama sent a strong "Don't f**k with me" message to the Republicans the other day:

(Sorry - my link thingy won't work for me)

You can google "Obama"+"I Won" to find a large cache of articles about this.

I also got a charge out of the steely glare that he leveled at Chief Justice Roberts as he bungled his delivery of the presidential oath during the… Continue
