Do You Believe in the Matrix?

Do you think it's possible that intelligence, consciousness could be transfigured into code? That we could exist in virtual realities of our own design? I think it's not only possible, but that it's possible within my lifetime, and probably most of yours. I think it's possible that this will mean we can live as long as we want, secure as files stored in quantum computers, able to filter and tailor the experiences of our existence, like super-powered parental controls. We'll be our own Gods,…

Workplace thugs

So I was threatened today at work. Shirt and tie business office and he told me he would kick my fucking ass, but in a nice way. I am not amused. Worse, I copied down what he said verbatim, and sent it to his manager. Not only was he not fired on the spot but his manager had the balls to suggest an e-mail I sent him made him angry because it was "incomplete". I fucking hate bullies and thugs.

Just got finished with an interview for ABC Nightline. Talking about exorcism. It will be on tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 26). Needless to say, I am not in favor of exorcism. We will see what they do with the editing. Could be good or bad, but interesting nevertheless.

Divine Plan...

"For billions of years, the divine plan's been doin' just fine. Now you come along and pray for something. Well, suppose the thing you want isn't in God's divine plan. What do you want Him to do? Change His plan? Just for you? Doesn't that seem a little arrogant? It's a divine plan! What's the use of bein' God if every run-down shmuck with a two-dollar prayer book can come along and fuck up your divine plan?"

Is It Always Right to Uphold Your Religious Convictions?

found via AtheistMedia

I must say it is not easy for me to form a decision here. Contrary to some people in the discussion i think that people running a PRIVATE business should be entitled to their prejudice including racism.

The only requirement I would have is that this… Continue

From Use Of Which Of The Following Can You Obtain Knowledge? Feelings, Intuition, Prayer, Reason, Hope, Emotions Or Faith.

Intuition is not valid. Feelings, intuition, prayer, hope, faith and revelation are not valid sources of knowledge. There is only the noncontrictory integration of perceptual evidence, otherwise known as reason. To be valid, a concept must fit without contradiction into your knowledge base both:

HIERARCHICALLY-perceptions(colors/shapes) -->1st order concepts (chair)-->2nd order concepts (furniture)-->3rd order concepts (goods). Spirit is not valid because it is not made up… Continue

Volition, will and choice are valid.

To write say or suggest, at any time or for any purpose, that choice doesn't exist is not constructive, clear or correct. It is describing the nature of choice that matters and it is dependent.

The Fred Phelps Circus: Coming to a School Near You

The Reverend Fred Phelps sent his God Hates Fags.com circus to my school. As expected, there were only three of them, while close to fifty former students and community members counter demonstrated peacefully across the street. Where were the current students and teachers, you ask? They were cloistered in the central courtyard of our school, eating donuts provided by the administration, having a safe, litigation-proof pep rally against hate.…

Ricky Gervais @ golden globes

Did anyone else watch the golden globe awards?  At the very end Ricky Gervais said "Thank god for making me an atheist".  I've known for sometime that he was an atheist, but I was a little surprised when he said that at such a big, nationally televised event.  Kudos to him.  It would be nice if more celebrities expressed their atheism publicly at such events.

Thrown out of church today...

Thrown out of church this morning. It was my pastor's birthday today so I brought in a piñata to help get the party started. This wasn't any old piñata, this was a Jesus piñata; and I brought a whip instead of a baseball bat. I guess they had enough of my antics when piles of red cherry Laffy Taffys came flying out after a few lashes. At that point I knew that I had made a huge mistake: Not everybody likes cherry. :(

Dallas Metroplex

Had a super time last night talking at The Blue Danube to the Metroplex Atheists. Great audience and so fun to talk to. It was pretty crowded with 130 or so heathens all in one room. Food was great and people were even greater! Sam Singleton preached the true gospel to the groups after I finished.  Off to Huntsville Friday. Pray to the FSM that the governor of Ala. doesn't send in the troops to break up our convention - since weren't his…

A Friend

I have a wonderful friend named Nancy, whom I have known for only a little over a year now. She and I have a lot of fun together. I'm glad that our religious differences don't play a part in our relationship. She is a very strong Christian, and also one of the most intelligent people I have met. I enjoy talking with her about the Bible and she even let me borrow her student guide to reading it. I laughed at how the book says that there is a certain way one should read the Bible, and that you… Continue

Fear of Coming Out

After going through a dramatic break-up, a cousin of mine got in touch with me, and dropped some, much to my surprise, encouraging words of wisdom. The next day, this cousin sent me one of those texts that requires you to message 10 or so other people.  It was something like "Deny your Heavenly Father Which is in Heaven, and He too will Deny You...Send this message to blah blah blah."  I'm thinking how wise this cousin is, and how I'd probably stay in contact with her from now on because she…

How old is religion?

I assume that religion is subject to evolution just like everything else. If I am right, then there must have been a beginning for religion. I suspect it started with agriculture when people found that they had more free time. They didn't have to spend every waking moment hunting and gathering food anymore. With more time, people started to do more thinking.…

The 2010 Darwin Awards (inofficial...)

A friend just sent me an e-mail with this inofficial "Darwin Award" list, which I thought would be funny to share with this community.

And here it is...

"Eighth Place

In Detroit , a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys.…

The cells in our cortex are essentially machines ready to be influenced by the world as we are born. A blank slate, if you will. While there is some genetically programmed organization there from embryological development, all areas in the cortex pretty much do the same thing as far as pattern recognition (see YT video of Jeff Hawkins’ (On Intelligence, Hierarchical Temporal Memory)). What makes certain areas of our cortex perform different functions has more to do with which sense organs…
