Just trying to find my way around here, figuring out what all these doodads and what-nots are for. Most of my blogging is at my own blog
but I guess the atheist-humanist related posts should get sucked into the aggregator...? I don't know how this one works.
Anyway, I grew up without much direct religious influence as a kid, figured out i was gay as soon as I learned there was a word for it, then got sucked into the Jesus Movement of the… Continue

Writing exercise. Write a paragraph or more answering a single question:
What do you think is the biggest misconception about life?
~ Heh. Religion. Of course. I think religion is corrupt and always has been, a lot of religion was put in place by people in an "established" place of society to basically put forth rules and obligations for the mass public that catered primarily to their way or understanding of what life is all about. It's not a question that religion is man… Continue

LOL! Louisana Governor, Bobby Jindal, will be eating his words for breakfast this week.
If you all watched his rebuttal to Obama's address to Congress a few weeks back, you noticed that Jindal isn't much on the idea of spending money on volcano monitoring. Well, Mt. Redoubt erupted in Alaska on Sunday.
Check out this blog and it's links. http://www.americablog.com/2009/03/bobby-jindals-volcano-erupted.html
Hahahah! Take that

To the AN community: I need your help!
I've got a theist on the attack on youtube, and I'm struggling to find a rational reply to his whirlwind of madness. I'd be very grateful if you could have a look at my forum post in the "winning arguments" group and offer me some advice on how to counter him.
Massive thanks in advance.

DNA! DNA! I’m sick about hearing about DNA. Did you know that in many court cases, if you don’t have DNA evidence, the whole trial could be in doubt? Prosecutors have a name for this. It’s called the CSI effect named after the popular TV series. Jurors expect all trials to have some black and white evidence in the form of DNA. While DNA has the ability to put a person at a crime (or not) scene, and it also contains all the… Continue

Part of the doctrine of most branches of evangelical Christianity is that it is important to convert others to the belief in order to save their eternal souls. This involves influencing others in order to sell the system.
If you want to sell an idea to someone it helps to know your audience. Going into a discussion with a set of false notions about the beliefs and values of those you are talking to just makes you sound ridiculous. You need to understand what the real issues are, not… Continue

What The Fuck Are Atheist Doing?
So it seems to me that exposure of atheists and atheist issues has been on the rise in the last few years. I think this is a wonderful accomplishment and to be taken very seriously.
There are recent books which have been New York Times best sellers like The God Delusion, Breaking the Spell, The End of Faith, God is not Great, Infidel and others. We have a wonderful recent movie from Bill Maher; Religulous.
If you are into… Continue

So if any one hasn't seen the footage I'll include it at the end of the blog. So 3-19-09 Pres. Obama was on 'The Tonight Show' with Jay Leno and made the comment "like the Special Olympics or something" in regards to his 129 bowling score. I personally find the comment very offensive. I have a brother with Down Syndrome. It is offensive in the same way to say "I am cheap like a kike", " drink like a mick", "lazy like a nigger" etc. I am an Obama supporter but he made it seem like the… Continue

Am I the only one who has this problem?
Lately, everyone I know seems to be getting Super-Religious. My parents are Catholic, but it was never a big deal that I didn't believe. But this past 6 months or so, they've been dropping Jesus bombs like crazy. My dad said that all my bad luck will go away if I just read one book of the bible. My mom said I was a "disappointment" because I don't believe.
And it's affected my friends, too. One good friend of mine has been writing… Continue

When our 3-year-old daughter was mauled by a neighborhood dog, we were distraught, as any parent would be. But, as Jehovah's Witnesses, we faced an even greater fear, beyond the trauma and scars introduced by the dog bites: What if she needed a blood transfusion? Our religious convictions mandated that we refuse. Her very life could be in danger, not from the attack, but from our beliefs.
My mother, an insanely devout woman if ever there was one, immediately called the congregation… Continue

I came across a non-Christian dating site called Plenty of Fish. Now I have been happily married for over 15 years, and I can't imagine life with anyone but my husband, but I was curious about this site that claimed to use some type of algorithm to match people up. With my husband's knowledge, I signed up for an account, stressing that I was happily married and looking for friends. So far, I've received about 4 messages. They all say basically the same thing (they're married, but "looking for… Continue

This is my first blog, I am an atheist, this however is nice to say because it is hard to say out loud in this area that I find myself (that by the way I did not choose, damn parents) I have, like many here, have a need bordering on obsession to know things and how they work, and why people believe what they do and why I believe what I do. I am grateful for forums like these that I may speak what is on my mind without fear of judgment or scorn, without it I would slowly go mad and retreat into… Continue

Having just gotten back from vacation it struck me how good a job the people of Gideon's bible have done of distributing their bible. It's truly amazing that pretty much every hotel room I stay in (in the U.S. at least) contains a copy. The unfortunate thing is that they (Gideon) seem to have somewhat of a monopoly at the moment. Wouldn't it be great if there was a book (or maybe even a pamphlet?) sitting next to their bible that provided details of what non-religious people believe, based on… Continue

When a Christian decided to go soul fishing on the Unreasonable Faith site recently, his ignorance of the reality of non-belief and non-believers tripped him up.
Most Religionists are incredibly ignorant of what it means to be a non-believer. Fundamentalists of any brand are among the most naive in this respect. The gross inadequacy of their primary assumptions about the causes and characteristics of atheism is one of the reasons why attempts to reconvert the disillusioned faithful… Continue
