Sex and Secularism

Amanda and I are working hard to get the survey results ready for release.  Hope to have something out in May if not sooner.  The data is almost overwhelming and the information coming out of it is very interesting.  It tells us a lot, especially how different people are when they leave religion.

I'll be talking a couple of times in May on the results.

The Negro Thought Police

One does not easily go against the grain in the black community without risking serious repercussions and penalties, including excommunication from blackness.

Within the African-American community, often ones 'blackness' has nothing to do with ones blood connections but on ones adherence to popular group thought. This form of tribalism turns the African-American community into a monolithic presence that thwarts progress by painting individuals…

Mark Driscoll FAIL

We live under the FOOLISH MYTH that to some degree, we are each our own 'God' declaring right and wrong and living our own life by our own standards.” - Mark Driscoll, Pastor, Mars Hill Church

Apparently Pastor Mark is an expert on the subject of foolish myths. (Approximately 8 seconds later, he talks about Jesus being born of a virgin.)

Doctor Who: The Douglas Adams serials

For all of you Douglas Adams and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fans, here are a couple of his other notable works: two serials from the long-running, classic British sci-fi show Doctor Who. Both of these serials are from what is considered the golden age of the show: the run of Tom Baker as the 4th incarnation of the eccentric, eponymous Doctor.

If you've never been exposed to the classic series of Doctor Who, these are great ones to come in on. The…

Heaven and Hell versus the Universe

Today at work I was doing a little wool gathering and thinking about death and dying and heaven and hell. I was also contemplating what happens when we die. As an atheist and not a believer in heaven and hell I considered a marvel of what happens when we die. When we are born we are collection of atoms and molecules drawn from each corner of the universe and we coalesce into this marvelous, unique, one-of-a-kind. There is not another one like us. Each one of us as varied as snowflakes. When we… Continue

1: This is who I am (Start Here)

These Blog posts are reprints from my Facebook page. I originally wrote them with my friends and family in mind. This was kind of my coming out to them. So just keep in mind that the original audience was mostly Christian. Enjoy...

I recently had a conversation with an old friend that caused me to seriously over react. You see she had just found out that I was an atheist. She was shocked and saddened by the news and that just pissed me off. I had forgotten that as…

2: Begin at the beginning

I am the son of a former Independent Baptist preacher and a traditional Christian house wife. Pretty much from the time I was born until I was 19 I was in church at least 3 times a week and sometimes 7, when there was a revival in town. My entire kindergarten through 12th grade was spent in the school our church ran. I participated in Bible camps, disciple now's, revivals, Vacation Bible schools, Youth rally's, Pro-Life marches, and prayer groups. I was a youth leader, a youth minister and even… Continue

3: Brenham TX, Really?

Not long after I graduated from high school I met a girl that would change my life forever. She was a special kind of girl. She fed on innocence and naiveté. I was sucked in by her charm and wasn’t able to get completely away from her for over 5 years.

Listen, I literally have no regrets, but this girl comes close to being an exception to that rule. But, she had a hand in me being where I am today. So, I can despise her and choose never to have contact with her again, but were it not for… Continue

4: Yes, there is more

By the time I moved to College Station in ’02 I had firmed up my ideas quite a bit. It was there that I started to consider myself agnostic. I looked at as many different religions as I could to see if I could distill them to their basics. What I came up with surprised me. I found that at their core they really weren’t that dissimilar. I also found that the modern interpretation of all these religions looked almost nothing like the original incarnation.

Since I know the most about… Continue

5: The Final Analysis

This is the last post that I am planning on this subject. Because I think after this I will have said everything that I need to say. And if I were to go any further I would only be listing off a litany of reasons why god doesn’t exist. That wasn’t the point when I started and I don’t think it would be right. Of course if anyone has any questions I will be more than happy to answer them or at the very least point you to where you can find the answer.

I have 2 final topics:

1. What do I… Continue

Ayn Rand says that religion has a monopoly on ethics. I think religion has a monopoly also on morals. Yet, I do think, that as an atheist, I have higher morals than say Jesus.

An Argument Against 'G'

An essay by – Heather Spoonheim

The habitual capitalization of the word ‘god’ is evidence of one of the most insidious mind-games ever perpetrated by the cult of Yahweh. To understand why, one must first understand that language, as a…

Doctor Who and Atheism

For those of you heathen sci-fi geeks out there, I've got an old gem for you here. From all the way back during the Tom Baker years of Doctor Who, here is "The Face of Evil". This serial is far from bashful in its criticism of religion. If you've got some spare time and a flair for camp, this is a great one to check out. I particularly love Baker's sly banter with the Voodoo Priest character; you really can't miss it.

There are plenty of other old Doctor Who serials with…

Ethics ate my brain

So, I started my Ethics class two weeks ago, and it's getting kinda hairy. There is only 22 of us, and there is already a line in the sand. On one side, there are the "so obviously atheist/agnostic it is not funny" and "The bible says it is the good book so I am going to agree with it.".

The question for Wed. was "are you a relativist or an absolutist?". I, either misreading or just not really explaining myself, stated that I was an absolutist. There are things that I…

Stirring up the pot in Dixie...

The Atheist/Agnostic organization at the University of Alabama is about to do some controversial chalking on the school's campus. We're expecting a little buzz about it. Here's a little preview for the Nexus.

1 Tim. 2:11-14

Shouldn't women be allowed to teach?

Think about it. -AAA :D

Matthew 5:27-30

Seems a bit excessive, hmm?

The Science of Good and Evil (London, April 11th, 2011)

I am going down to London to go see Sam Harris in an Intelligence Squared debate the "reverand" Dr Giles Fraser, Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral on the topic of where do our ideas about morality and meaning come from?

The last time I went to one of these it was the now legendary Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry Vs Anne Widdecombe and Archbishop John…

This has absolutely nothing to do with atheism but I could use some advice.

I have a dilemma. I haven't dated in years. Not because I can't get a date, but because I got my heart stomp on in the past. So since then I have had a wall up that no one has been able to penetrate. I mean no one...NO ONE! Anyway I just recently spent the weekend with an ex-girlfriend(Not the one that stomped on my heart)This ex is the only ex I am still friends with. she invited me to a party she was throwing at her house, so of course I went. For the most part the night went as expected (we… Continue
