It took a while after The Thinking Atheist premiered on the internet before its host, Seth Andrews, was willing to talk about the impact that his atheism had on his family and his relationship with them. His parents, being theologians and deeply rooted in their belief, were never going to take the news well, but what made it worse for Seth was their apparently unceasing attempts to woo him back to the fold. What I suspect they have no understanding of is that, once the blinkers have been…Continue
The other day I went to my daughter’s mechatronics engineering lecture (ok, I do weird things to pass the time). I wanted to see what changes there have been over the years and to recapture some of my youthful memories. The lecture was about electrical engineering techniques for analysing circuits (eg Thevenin & Norton equivalent circuits, substitution, mesh analysis, etc) – memories flowed back like there was no tomorrow. And I realised, nothing had changed. The ratio of 4 females in a…Continue
Over the years I have had to unlearn a lot of things I had learnt and relearn ways of making my life meaningful in this godless universe. From being a theist to becoming an atheist and morphing into a secular humanist, I gained a lot of self-reliance and self-confidence, but there is that lurking feeling of missing something that was once so satisfying.
1. I MISS BELIEVING THAT SOMEONE IS ALWAYS THERE
Loneliness is probably the most central struggle of human…Continue

Friendly Helpers For Those Expatriating?
If anyone outside the USA has possible job leads for persons wanting to expatriate, I would be grateful for friendly voices and tips.
I don’t mean to “cry wolf” because it is not literally bad enough here in the US to need the protection of legal sanctuary.
But some folk (I’m one of them) have a suspicion it will become quite bad in upcoming years. I can speak some Spanish, German, and French, but not yet…Continue
The Word ‘Truth’
Has the word ‘truth’ been fully and completely co-opted? In my view the answer is yes. Words such as accuracy and correctness must be used now to convey something the word truth used to still convey as recently as 30 years ago.
It seems the word truth was being corrupted and co-opted generations earlier however. Superman fought “for truth, justice, and the American way” as though a non-earth-born life form would,…Continue
[Quick edit: my blog could make it seem I recently became an atheist. Really it's been somewhere between 7 and 20 years. The lower number reflects how long I've said "I'm an atheist." The higher number reflects how long I've said, "by nearly every definition I'm an atheist, so I'm probably an atheist."
I think the hedging language tends to be a normal part of the development of an overt atheist from a covert atheist.]
Atheism to me is more of a beginning than an…Continue
Here is an outline of my religious history, to give some background to my blog posts for anyone who wants it:
I was born in 1970 in Western New York and baptized Catholic as an infant. My mother was Catholic and wanted everyone in the family to be baptized into that church. I never liked it or believed in it much, and by age twelve I told her, "Mom, there is no god. I am an atheist." She accepted it kindly.
In 1996, a non-denominational church full of people who…Continue
I have been a member of Atheist Nexus for a few years now, but have never posted a blog post until now. I joined several atheist forums and groups around the same time back when I joined this one, and have not gone back to them all to follow up.
I have always wanted to reach believers, especially since being a devoted Christian for 12 years myself and realizing the damage it did, as well as how easy it was to fall for it, even for someone like me who considers himself…Continue

Living in Bedford Heights has been markedly enjoyable for the nine years since my wife and I moved here. It’s quiet, the neighbors are terrific, the town is well kept with excellent city services, and I really can’t think of a single negative to register. I doubt it would rate as a utopia, but it’ll do until utopia comes along.
One of the items we get from the city on a yearly basis is a calendar, which mostly outlines city events, council meetings and the like. Up until this…

You remember the movie Network, don’t you? Peter Finch as veteran UBS anchorman Howard Beale, growling into a TV camera, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” That was a potent declaration of independence and non-conformance that Beale made. The only problem is that he shrunk away from it not that much later, in the face of billionaire mogul Arthur Jensen. Jensen’s sole purpose was to use Beale as a Pied Piper to mollify the peasantry, the better to pursue his own…Continue

I remember the moment of my epiphany, the moment I became an atheist. I was 20 years old. I had read the oscillating universe by George Gamow & the origin of species by Charles Darwin.
Then, suddenly, I realized we homo-sapiens are just a kind of animal like other animals on this spinning rock we call Earth. Whatever purpose we feel we have is one we devise for ourselves; it’s not handed to us from on high. We are on our own; there is no deity holding a net under our feet as…
