Atheist Congregations

I've been thinking about the many different kinds of freethinkers/atheists/non-theists I run into. Here is my breakdown of the sectarians in the naturalistic "community." I hope this starts a healthy, productive, creative discussion!

A: Angry, aggressive and obsessed with anything anti (a, a, a, non, un. . .)

T: Thoughtful, thinkers and tend toward positive conversations and mutual learning

H: Humanistic; community-centered; socially conscious and good-hearted

E:… Continue

Christian Reading Material

Today, I happened to walk by a buzz. Several people were standing around gawking at a stack of books. I went over to see what was up. It was a collection of the Twilight Series from Stephanie Meyer. I have never read any of her writings, but I know this series is about Vampires.

"Vampires?" I quizzed. "Yes!" they all replied. "These are wonderful books, well written, with interesting characters." "I liked the movie" another piped in. "Yes, there is another movie coming soon!" which… Continue

I have a blog you should read and RSS

I actually have two blogs. This one is about atheism and polyamory.

But this one earns me money the more people read it, and most of what gets posted on the first goes on this anyway.

So, I would love it if you stopped by, set up an RSS feed and read every day.

Why is there so much of terror in India??

Any honest, rational and impartial person is against terrorism. We sincerely wish that all this mindless killings should come to an end. Why is there so much of terror in this country?

Let us first take the case of this state – West Bengal.

During the last 32 years of Left-front rule, 45000 people were killed.

The surprising fact is that most of the political parties of India are up against terrorism and are ever ready to implement ‘stringent anti-terrorism measures’ to… Continue

Freethought Missionary

Like a pastor or missionary, I have the awesome joy of calling time spent socialising 'organising work'... if only I got paid for it. I started the day with a long bike ride with a fellow freethinker discussing among others things our visions for the group. Then I went to Just For Him, joining Daniel and other freethinkers for conversation and atmosphere. Both of these 'outreach' activities will become regular features of my Sundays. Afterwards, I found new inventive ways to look for local… Continue

Who was Neda? and why I put my last blog post!

In my last blog post I put two videos of a girl’s death scene whom was shot to dead by government religious militia (Basij). That post became very controversial. And few people objected me why I put these videos here. However I think there is no need to answer them here again because other friends replied them perfectly but I think it better to write a little more… Continue

Applying to be a notary

I had fun today! I made plans to go down to the courthouse, pay the fee, sign the form and get a notary commission. In Georgia it's astonishingly easy to become a notary. Two people from your county affirm you're an upstanding citizen. You take that and a photo ID to the clerks office of your county, pay $30, take an oath, and congrats you're a notary!

My plan was to scratch out the 'so help me God' portion of the oath and see what happens. Here's the outline version of what… Continue

Republicans Are Calling For U.S. Intervention in Iran

Isn't two Orwellian perpetual wars enough for this country? The war mongers, like Senator McCain and G.W. Bush think-alikes, are Christians who believe in the Bible and the afterlife.

The killing of Neda and others in Iran is an insult to reason and an insane act. Religious violence is a bad method of population control. Religion, with its emphasis on “be fruitful and multiply,” is screwing up the human experience.

Does it not say in the Quran, “do not kill innocent… Continue

Just a tad bit annoyed, just a little...

This is something like a rant...

There's a turning point taking place in my life right now and I find myself wanting to share this experience with someone else. Someone who wont tell me to pray when things arent going as Ive planned or give me naive optimism because they believe 'god will work it out', someone that wont give credit to the supernatural for my successes! Im meeting new people and trying so hard to see people beyond their religious beliefs but no matter the conversation it… Continue

Partisan Stupidity

From http://tinyurl.com/l5kwpj Here is what I wrote though:

Have you ever had the pleasure to observe someone incredibly competent, thoughtful, skillful, and a leader in their field perform a job (such as brain surgery)? And then some fucking retard who hasn't the foggiest clue how to do this job criticizes ("What I'd do is cut right through that there Medulla Oblangata...")? Watching the way the Republicans are criticizing President Obama over his reaction to the Iranian Election… Continue

Camp of the redeemer and miscellaneous bird brains

I saw something a while back about this jesus camp thing and although I never took time to watch it, I did see a recorded episode this evening. Too bad my husband's 16 year old son is planning to work with them for the summer, I hate that the inlaws are "pretty much okay" with him going there at his age. They are a Pentacostal group but barely even so anymore. So I can only hope the hocus pocus doesn't take over his body and mind but he quietly assures me it's the free bed, free meals and a… Continue

Petition Against British Creationist Zoo

Our British members may be interested in signing an online petition against a British zoo which is teaching creationism to school children. The petition already has more than 800 signatories. Thanks to Max from Brisbane Atheists Meetup for this info.

Here's the blurb from the petition:

"Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm (NAZF) is a zoo just outside Bristol that markets itself to schools and is heavily focused on child education.

However, instead of teaching well-established… Continue

What if you only had a trillion years?

Cross-posted over at my blog, Cubik's Rube.

This isn't an argument I've seen put forward anywhere before, so it's possble I'm having one of my more original moments here. I've written before about the idea that only a god, or an eternal afterlife, or something of that ilk, can give life any meaning or purpose, and why I think it's bollocks. But here's a way of looking at… Continue

"Coming Out as an Atheist" Why a massive gender gap in the data?

As many of you know, A/N hosted my survey "Coming Out as an Atheist" last fall, and in the end it attracted a huge response (thanks in part to cross listings on other sites). A total of 8,204 "atheists" started with survey and over 9 of 10 completed the 51 questions.

Standard demographic information was collected. These data include age, occupation, country (and region within the US), race, level of education and partnered status. All of these data were interesting and useful,… Continue

Human spirit, not God, will lift people of Iran

The tweets come from all over the world. Humanity is uniting. One tweet that stands out, “On 9/11 the world said we were Americans. Today, we're Iranians.” When times get hard, when it seems like there is no hope, the human spirit rises above everything else. It lifts those that are tired, it heals those that are wounded, and it cuts through differences to find common ground – freedom.

I use to be "pro-life" (code for anti abortion) because (quite frankly) I was STUPID! Here is what I think now:

As a former youth minister, I would set up scenarios with unsuspecting kids about who to throw out on a boat... and that they would always end up "aborting" someone important, like the pope or Beethoven.

HOWEVER, why didn't anyone say back to me, "But what if Hitler's mom had an abortion?" Bada bing.

Why doesn't anyone ever say, "WTF, god... you… Continue
