church service at public school

Lately, I've been walking a track around a large lake. Part of the track runs parallel to a busy street and then across that street is a public middle school. I noticed one Sunday morning while walking, huge, tall billowing flags for a Church. After a few more laps the signs were gone.

It really bothered me, that on this public school lot, were signs for a church service that is held there every Sunday. When I think separation of church and state, I imagine church being far removed… Continue

Kansans, Neighbors, and Travelers!

If any of you are close and interested, Sternberg Natural History Museum at Fort Hays State University in Hays Kansas is hosting an exhibit on Charles Darwin and his studies. The exhibit is currently running until August. I plan on taking my daughter. There is also the 40 ton crocodile, and forensics lab which is hands on science for the whole family to solve crimes using DNA and such. Just another rare, rational thing to do here in the bible belt!

Atheist Prime Minister of Australia

Australia now has an atheist, redheaded, working class, woman prime minister.
And you Americans thought getting a black guy was a long shot!!
Talk about made my day, when in one of her first public interviews our new PM Julia Gillard professed that she was a lapsed baptist who is actually an atheist because she just cant bring herself to believe in it all. You go girl!!!

Atheist billboard defaced on N.C.'s Billy Graham Parkway

"Unknown vandals unhappy about atheists' billboard in Charlotte, N.C., spray-painted "Under God" on the ad, the city's atheist association discovered Monday. The defaced message will remain in place until after July 4, the group reports, which is the soonest that workers can furnish a fresh billboard image."… Continue

Jesus of Nazareth: Cult Leader

If you ask experts on cults what makes a cult a cult, one of the things they'll tell you is that cults demand separation from family, friends and society.

Which raises an interesting question. Positing (for the sake of argument) that there was a historical Jesus, would he qualify (by modern standards) as a cult leader?

Here's a little piece of scripture that suggests "yes".

Matthew 8:18-22…

The Deprogrammed Atheist vs. The Non-deprogrammed Atheist

Today I have been reflecting on the difference between me as a not-yet-deprogrammed atheist for 35 years and me as an almost deprogrammed atheist. I first became an atheist in 1975 after studying evolution in college. I kept my beliefs to myself, although if anyone asked, I would admit that I was atheist. I never read any books about atheism and I never learned much more about my atheism, until recently.

As a not-yet-deprogrammed atheist, I was not upset by religion. I could easily… Continue

Faith healing, my ass.....

Forgive me for being so very very brief in this blog, but i am far too tired to be as verbose as i like to get:

For one thing, my son developed childhood ALL (a form of lukeimia) when he was 3, in the middle of my divorce.

my (ex)wife and her family are x-tians, and not even very well read ones at that (and ONE of her uncles is a minister!) ...

During this time i went from being a STAUNCH agnostic to being a convinced non-theist...

w/o getting into…

Jesus is inside you…and you want me to feel him…?

I decided to post my last blog-post on facebook and I just happen to have family in TN, GA, and NC that are all Young Earth Creationists...yay me! My Uncle took the liberty to comment, and here is a little taste; "I'll live for JESUS and die for JESUS...only saying that to let you know he is living inside me. If I could let… Continue

Jesus Died How Now?

I’m going to choose to be more serious on this one…sorry! Link to the story on bottom. I think the important question shouldn’t be whether or not Jesus died on a cross but rather, whether or not he even existed? Furthermore, if he did exist, does that still mean the stories that surround him are anything more than mythical exaggerations attached to…

For my USA friends this coming 4th July...

Called 'The father of the Constitution', in 1785, Madison wrote "During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial... its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."

So.. no change there

Texas GOP: Another Step Toward Theocracy?

I am used to some closed-minded rhetoric (from both sides of the aisle, sometimes) concerning matters that I find important. It's usually one or two wing-nutty individuals like Michelle Bachmann or Sarah Palin who set me off, when they spout some inane statement about subjects like homosexuality or secular government. I try not to habitually make statements dismissing an entire political… Continue

Arguing with a Christian

Arguing with a Christian about Science vs. Religion is pointless. It’s pointless because the argument doesn’t end when one side or the other makes a very good point or presents undisputable truth or fact as when an argument should end. No, the argument will only end when the Christian stops being a stubborn moron. Even then only one of two things will happen, one they actually listen and learn something, though not…
