Often when I reflect upon my day, I am amazed how much of my time is wasted going through hate mail. No, I'm not talking about those "my god loves you and enjoy the fires of Hell" letters I get from those wacky and kooky theists. I'm speaking of the emails I get from other atheists. Yeah, I actually get more from our team.
The last four emails I have received could be boiled down to this:
"There is no such thing as a new atheist!"

The complaint of atheists with respect to the "Seven in Heaven" sign in NY honoring the fallen firefighters of 9/11 is just the type of thing that gives atheists a bad name. C'mon, let's use a little judgment in picking our fights.
1. Anything from which any disrespect towards those who lost their lives on 9/11 might be inferred, rightly or wrongly so, such as complaining about the subject sign, certainly seems ill advised and stupid;

Rummaging through my reconstructed disk drive I found a bunch of stuff I thought lost forever. I got it all back and then some. I won't linger. Here's a poem I wrote in 1999. Nuff said.
Reduction in Force
Donald R Barbera, 1999
Your attendance has been abysmal. Your attitude leaves a lot to be desired.
Your work habits have been at best inept. You’re lucky you…Continue

I continue to run up against this in my conversations with local atheists: "yes, but I still think there is a lot of bad that religions cause and we need to make them stop". This, of course is a paraphrase. I find it is always in response to any suggestion of setting aside the ranting and complaining about religions and moving on to creating community and doing service to address social and human problems.
So I am wondering to myself (since I can't seem to get anyone to engage in the…Continue
