I received a revelation from God last Thursday.
God has decided that the system of Heaven and Hell was just not working. Torturing prisoners had grown boring, and hymns of praise even more boring. So he has abolished Heaven and Hell and set up a new system of sequential reincarnation. When you die, your soul will go to the back of a line. When you reach the front of the line, you go into the next available human body.
He has declared… Continue

I ran across this (rather long) public domain essay by Robert Ingersoll (a 19th century atheist) and found that it's still contemporaneous. I kept thinking of Islam as I read this, even though it's really directed at Christians. There are some really good points covered: particularly the secular nature of our constitution and the the break it represents from the divine authority previously assumed…

One of the very few joys of chemotherapy, I’ve learned, is the opportunity it offers for catching up on one’s long-overdue reading. I usually take to the cancer ward as I call the infusion room at my clinic, a couple of “readers’” magazines, and until the antihistamine kicks in (added to the saline solution to ward off such complications of Treanda as flush and flashes of heat in the head, even difficulty… Continue

-are not mysogynists
-are not religious or influenced by the bible for their position
If you make up pseudo science to "prove" a fetus so inferior to a human, are you any different than a creationist?
What is the hard science that supports the idea that a fetus is not a human, and thus has no more rights than a blob of cancer, or an appendix?
At what point, precisely, does a fetus become a human? Birth? Is a fetus not a human 1 second before… Continue

It is hard to find time to write while touring beautiful Ireland. Many photos and stories that will need to wait for a later time. While the weather has not cooperated - rain almost all the time every day - it cannot hide the beauty of Ireland and its people. We spent two wonderful days with John and Mary Buckley in the Shannon area. John is an excellent tour guide and his Scotch is first class. Wonderful conversation each evening.

After a lively debate with my girlfriend over Bhutan and their proposed anti-conversion law I feel the need to do a little backpedaling. Maestro some calliope music if you please. I feel that, perhaps, my initial culturally centered opinion was a tad harsher than I…

In the afterword of "The End of Faith," Sam Harris responds to criticism that "the greatest crimes of the 20th century were perpetrated by atheists...Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and Kim Jong." Harris answers by saying, "these regimes have been mere litanies of delusion-- about race, economics, national identity..."
Note that all but one of these depots (Hitler) were communist. Almost all atheists whose writings I have read are more than atheists; they are empiricists. That is, they… Continue

Here's two, from Fundies Say the Darndest Things, http://www.fstdt.com
that didn't make the list:
Darwinism has long ago been shown to be pure mythology. It's only supporters are the phoney profs that use it as a vehicle for dumbing down the naive student population and applying for federal grants, AND gullible followers. Tell me, when's the… Continue

Russia and America have to worry about agent Salt. Salt answers the age old question: What’s worse than an action movie with no plot?
CIA agent Evelyn Salt’s (Angelina Jolie) life is thrown into turmoil when her loyalty is questioned in front of her bosses by a man named Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) who claims to be an agent high up in the Russian government. They accuse her of knowing about the murder of a Russian dignitary. Worse, she knows that her husband, a Mike Krause… Continue

I am all about equality. Really, it's a big deal to me and it'll
probably come up a lot in my writing. The gay rights issue is huge and multi-faceted, but there is a particular aspect of it I would like to explore. To facilitate that, I'm going to make my general position (which I am not interested in exploring) clear from the beginning:… Continue

Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam has a group of political confidants with which he meets every Friday morning. This isn't particularly strange in that many politicians have advisors and trusted friends from whom they
seek counsel on a variety of issues. What is worrisome is that his group
of advisors appear to be religious in nature.
In a video interview with David Fowler of the Family Action Council of Tennessee, an organization whose mission is "to promote and… Continue

Why do I read and write about atheism every day? Why do I love to find and collect bible verses that demonstrate that the character God is a sadistic, murdering, baby killing, slave promoting, misogynic, and jealous jerk? Why do I spend hours every day on the computer reading and posting atheistic content, much to the chagrin of my wife and consternation of my non-atheist Face book friends? I think it is because I am still unconsciously afraid of Hell.
I do not consciously believe in… Continue

Contrary to popular opinion I don’t hate Christians. That I am an atheist is true enough. But, just because I choose to live a life without gods does not mean that I hate those who choose to live according to the will of their imaginary friend. It’s not the Christians that I hate, but rather a large portion of their agendas that cause me to take umbrage. Think of my attitude as an atheist… Continue

So apparently it is tradition to tell how you became enlightened when you join A|N, so here it is:
I am Logan Grado, 18 years old and grew up in a not so strictly christian family (presbyterian), and attended a catholic high school.
I spent the first 14 years of my life quietly accepting religion as slightly ridiculous but true, because my parents are definitely smarter people than I (Both being M.D.'s) I was always a critical thinker and always… Continue

This is something I've wanted to get off my chest for nearly nine years now, and I've never had a place to vent about it until I found this place. In an odd bit of synchronicity, I was reminded about it twice in the last week to boot. About a week ago, I saw a video again of Bill Maher saying that whatever else we want to say about the 9/11 hijackers, we can't call men who willingly flew planes into the sides of buildings cowards. Then just today, I was listening to Sam Harris's… Continue
