Desperately Seeking Approval: Overt and Covert Reasons for the Adult Bar Mitzvah

"As a beautiful flower that is full of hue but lacks fragrance, even so fruitless is the well-spoken word of one who does not practice it."

The Dhammapada

Informed of a former colleague’s decision to have a bar mitzvah in middle age, I can’t help but look for reasons, since the ceremony is completely optional at this point in life.

For a complex variety of reasons, many of them personal, some Jewish adults genuinely want to reconnect with their…

Satiation, the thing no one wants to talk about.

Satiation, the thing no one wants to talk about. Relationships become satiated, that is to say, we get used to each other and that means it is harder to stimulate your partner or respond to a partner. It is a natural thing, just as eating steak for every meal would get boring. Successful partners can learn to keep their relationship fresh but there is no template for doing it. Each relationship must find its own way.

The biggest roadblock to…

My reply to is

To the writers and editors of the Toronto Sun:

In reply to Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana:

I have read your essay, and I use that word generously, regarding the legislation of more modest clothing (sharia) in order to reduce sex assaults at York University. I have decided to opt against discussing in detail how the Koran was written a good thirty years after the prophet died by five guys under the employment of a power hungry caliph (emperor), and will resist the urge to…

For those that did not think 'faith' had much to do w/influence etc.. with Miami guy that ripped face off homeless guy...

... . .. .. . ?

Yet faith remains a recurring theme in the story of Eugene’s life — and in his horrifying death. It is why he evangelized, led a Bible study for friends and had recently been looking for a church home. It is what sent his mother door to door, looking for a church that would have her son’s funeral. It is why police found verses ripped from his Bible scattered across the MacArthur Causeway a few feet from his body. And, perhaps, it is what helps people understand what…

my green blogs

I write a fairly regular Green Diary on the World Land Trust website. While not an atheist blog per se, like any rational biologist, it often implies atheism. And does from time to time comment on such things as the impact of missionaries on the world, and another hobby horse of mine is the environmental impact of foreign aid (often in the form of goats and camels) promoted by organisations such as Christian Aid.

Non theists, and rationalists might like to add their comments…

I give up. Christians can have America....but

I give up Christians, you win. You can have control of America. Your arguments using the Bible are too much for me to refute. You want to use the Bible for the basis for all of our laws. So I am giving you full reign to change all of our current laws to coincide with the laws your God commands in the Bible.

Before I give you full and supreme power over America, there are a few items that have to be decided. Which religion will everyone have to conform? You can’t have different…

Use the Bible to prove morality

There has been a continuing argument made by Christians that human morality is based solely on the Bible. We have heard the questions that Christians ask: “Where do you get your morality from?” “If there is no God, why don’t you just rape, murder and steal whenever you want?”  Christians believe that the only reason that we have societies is because of their God. They believe that it is due to the Ten Commandments that we have the laws that we follow. Of course Atheists find this reasoning…

Trying to explain my atheism to my grandparents...

I come from a Christian family. My mom is very... very religious. She cried her eyes out when I said that I didn't want to get baptized. My father, I love him. He's very understanding and open-minded about my lack of belief and has been a huge help when it comes to dealing with my mother.

But my grandparents on the other hand, they are very much a picture perfect view of christian country folk. I am made to dress up in ridiculous clothing every Sunday because we are going to…

Moving Forward in a post-religious world

I want to thank everyone for their support.  I feel very welcome.  I am receiving a lot of support from new found friends as well.  Although I have not the courage to overtly state my opinion to everyone in my family, I also think it is not necessary that they all need to know right away.  I have been very open about it in public and most of those people are either indifferent, agnostic or atheist themselves.  I am a little shocked by this realization.  I was under the impression that so…

Three hours of Internet talk radio well worth listening to!

If you want to listen to overpaid, overhyped, pampered and spoiled corporate talk-radio shills parroting their particular party talking points and generally adding NOTHING to the discourse (but filling their pockets and their corporate master's pockets), by all means, do so. But if you want a talk-radio show that cuts to the chase and calls out those who would destroy FREEDOM and LIBERTY for all, then log on to ShockNet Radio at 8 ET/5…

What If Atheists Acted Religious?

The Theists are at it again...

So. I know we here at A/N are great supporters of reson and rationality. But it seems confirmed once again that our philisophical opponents do not share in this love for intelligence. Here is a facebook page that will make you cringe.

I responded with the appropriate maturity to such blatant stupidity.…

SocioSexual Orientation

In my talk to the Bay Area Atheists, I discussed the evidence for our socio-sexual orientation. A concept I discuss in Sex and God. When I introduced the concept to the group and asked, "How many of your are familiar with this idea?" not one hand raised. This is NOT to be confused with Sexual Orientation. The research on this concept has been around for 20 years, yet no one in the sex education or even the sex positive community seems to know about it. Take a…
