Why God Must Remain Hidden

The biggest problem religion faces in hawking its wares is that its primary product – god – is unavailable for examination, mostly because it doesn’t exist. Yet religions continue to insist with zealous ferocity that their god is out there and that it must be acknowledged, worshipped, and obeyed. As a primary result of this, the game of religion necessarily becomes a shell game, which has its deity hidden behind mysteries and obtuse dogma and holy books which require interpretation for…

Taking on the Generative Stage of Life, Waiting to die

The next step in this progression from birth through death, I am at the closing-down-my-home-of-42-years-stage!

A friend asked my daughter who was moving; her reply:

"My mom has 40+ years of items that she kept, all well organized though, plus mountains of paperwork from her business and teaching and giving speeches, and genealogy records from both sides of her parents dating back centuries, and old photographs…

Revolt of the Angels Book Review

“I have delved deep into Oriental antiquities and also into those of Greece and Rome. I have devoured the works of theologians, philosophers, physicists, geologists, and naturalists. I have learnt. I have thought. I have lost my faith.” – RotA

Answers to questions from a student of apologetics.

A question about origin: Where did I come from? Where did the origin of life come from?

(JBH) We do not know. Those who know the most about biochemistry say that at present their best guess is that the first replicators were RNA strands on the edges of undersea hot-water vents, when the chemistry was quite different from what it is today. Research into this question is continuing.

A question for purpose: Why am I here? (Do I have a purpose? Is there…

Sarah Huckabee-Sanders on the stripping of children from their parents | Gott Mit Uns

In a rather testy exchange today reporters grilled the White House Press Secretary about the current administration's decision to move from a civil to a criminal stance regarding people crossing the US/Mexican border.  By classifying this as a crime it allows the ICE agents to separate the children from their parents. You can listen to Session's decision…

The Virtues of Guilt

NPR’s Morning Edition today featured a story about a belated Japanese apology for the mistreatment of American prisoners of war during World War II. But the apology was not from the Japanese government, nor was it from all of the many large Japanese corporations that had used American POWs as slave labor during the war.  Only the head of Mitsubishi Materials had the courage to expose his company to the “eternal shame” of admitting what his predecessors had done, and his representative…

The Disturbing Final Goal of Westworld

My wife and I have been following HBO’s Westworld since its first episode last year. We’ve “met” Maeve and Teddy and the Man In Black, and of course Bernard and Delores, along with many assorted others, and followed their adventures in a complex milieu which makes the original 1973 film look like kindergarten by comparison. Indeed, a shocking event which terminated the first season would have led one to believe that a major and possibly insuperable monkey wrench had been thrown into…

Don’t Distrust Atheists; Distrust Deniers of Free Will!

In my last blog post, I noted the high level of prejudice against atheists and its basis in the assumption that atheists are more likely to behave immorally because they do not fear God.  I did not believe that assumption to be correct, and I have discovered a little more evidence against it since them.

First, the small groups of hunter-gatherers that I wrote about seldom worshiped gods or other divine beings that they saw as concerned about morality. …

Secular Owned businesses

I am looking for secular owned businesses. I can't seem to find anything online for anything like that. We launched Humanist One on June 1st and have put a directory listing link on it. If anyone is a secular business, please put a free listing on the site at humanistone.com. If you don't own a business (or have a product or service to sell), and know someone that does.... Please guide them to the site. Thanks, Sam

I call out a Preacher on his lies!

Howdy! I had an exchange with Preacher Matt Powell and asked him to back up his claims about conversations he claims to have had with atheist. He promply tried to cover up his lies. This is my new video about the exchange. Was I too harsh on him? How would you have handled it?…

Did Human Morality Come from God or from Evolution?

Public prejudice toward atheists is still high, not only in the United States but in most of the countries in the world. Around half of Americans would refuse to vote for an atheist for public office, according to recent polls. Polls also show that the rejection of atheists is mainly due to the public assumption that people who are irreligious are also immoral, since they have no fear of punishment by God. But is God really the source of human morality? Certainly the Judaeo-Christian-Muslim…

Redesign Block Feature On Social Media

I would like to propose that the block feature be redesigned. If someone clicks on the block feature when trying to block someone on a public page, they need to go to a form that will collect relevant information and screen shots that will ONLY be seen by an elected committee of peers (Or hired social scientists with degrees) who will decide if the block is the right thing to do and implement the block for that person if it IS the right thing to do. I think the block feature as it is today…

Facing the end

I had not meant to post again so soon, but circumstances compelled me.  I'm writing partly in response to Joan Denoo's hopeful response that we atheists can do better in creating a world free of religious fantasy and conflict.

Maybe religion will retreat only so far and under certain conditions.  Maybe we can't cause major change. I think it was Shimon Peres who said that if a condition resists all effort at change, perhaps it should be considered a permanent part of the…

So, What If…?

It’s finally happened.  The smoking gun has been discovered in unique, utterly new evidence, the data has been verified, all the tests confirm it … THERE IS A GOD.  Now what?  For me, beyond a shrug and a bit of bemusement, little or no change.

Oh, but aren’t you excited or thrilled?  You see, we were right all along!  Wassamatta, eating too much crow?  Those sour grapes turning in your stomach?

Nope, don’t like grapes and crow isn’t on my…

Is it OK to Use Cannabis? A Parent's Guide

With recreational marijuana legalized in nine states and medical marijuana legal in more states than not, the subject of whether or not to use it as a parent or how to talk about it with your children may have come up. As a parent, you want to be informed – because who wants to sound like they don’t…
