To everyone commenting:

I just found a page where I have to approve of posters. I thought it was automatic. I've tried to approve of them all, but it doesn't look like it's working. Please be patient with me :)

SPSU Secular Freethinkers group successful

The campus group I founded at my school (southern polytechnic state university) has been successful. We already have around 25 members. People have warmed up to each other quite nicely. We've applied for affiliation with CFI, and in a week we will know how much funds we will get from the school.

Heal The Nation of Grenada With Love of Jesus:

The Grenada Informer September 27Th, 2008 online news head lines begins with this words 'When I noticed how the Astoria Hall was packed with both NDC & NNP people and the something happened at Medgar Evers College where I observed that large numbers were unable to get in to attend the Town Hall Meeting held by the NDC Chapter in New York area, I concluded that is evidence that Grenadians have the ability to come together for the advancement of the Nation of Grenada....'

How to get through to believers

Understanding causality, who can justify condemning believers for believing, since they were after all, shaped, molded, and ultimately conditioned to believe just as non-believers where conditioned to not believe? Yet, we just can’t stand by watching them fritter their lives away being motivated, moved, and ultimately being hijacked by this contagious and dangerous god meme. Why can’t we? Because to survive as a species we need to acknowledge and address reality. We can’t just stand by, because… Continue

Went to a special screening of Religulous last night!

It was beyond amazing! Bill Maher does a superb job in asking normally intelligent people (sometimes not so) why they believe in something that so resembles a fairytale.

At many points in the movie Bill Maher leaves his interview subjects speechless on topics on the bible, because the subjects are ignorant.

This was also my first outing with fellow atheists and was amazed at how many people out in my area thought like I did. The whole experience was quite refreshing.

I'm about to… Continue

The universe has no commitment to make us happy

We are temporary beings subject to the laws of the universe and we are raised and shaped to have the mentality that we can "have it your way" when in reality we cannot. We are determined by a chain of cause and effects, and when things don't go how we think they "ought" to, then we are discontented. Our longing for comfort and survival go so far as to the point we disillusion ourselves to believe there are such things as ghosts\spirits that live on after our physical bodies die, that there is a… Continue

I'm shocked to see this here in CA

A Shasta County atheist sued top state corrections officials Monday, claiming that his constitutional rights were violated when he was returned to prison after objecting to participation in a program with religious overtones as a condition of parole.

Barry A. Hazle Jr., 40, was released from prison in February 2007 after doing a year for drug possession. He was required to complete a 90-day drug treatment program and was… Continue

Survey data keeps coming in THANK YOU

Thanks so much for supporting my sociological survey. I have been looking at the data as they come in, and so far there are no big surprises, but I have not begun to cross tabulate any variables as yet. Nearly 25% are outside of the US, which is great, but I am hoping for many more as we keep this live for another couple weeks.

Please send me feedback or comment!

My Mercy Story

Back in March 2008 I began posting on Mercy Ministries of Australia. Initially it was just a passing news story, I commented on it first here: Mercy, mercy , mercy me... which I followed with Here cometh the pain, or have mercy on Mercy? .

Mercy and Gloria jeans went into damage control and really the story…

the coin was a dime.

in my chubby little hand

it bought planes and dreams.

Well, Bushs' bamboozling bullshit stick is apparently all worn out.

Congress was not going to be panicked this time, no they weren't. Twice was enough for them.

The worst thing that might happen? It happened more than seven years ago.

And today, finally, things started getting… Continue

Pastor Thinks His Flock Are Idiots Too

Well, it's nice to see I'm not the only one. That seems like a harsh thing to say, but really...

Rev. Johnson and 32 other pastors are openly preaching politics in their churches, ignoring the special rule special religious folks get so they can skip out on their taxes. I'm getting to where I'm fine with this--I'm just looking for any reason to take this privilege away from churches and make the pony up the phat cash the rest of us have to. Yes, yes, there's the separation of church… Continue

existence might be...

Today was so much yesterday that I thought about just changing the date... but there was a difference.

I watched some football today.

And, for the first time in a year, the Chiefs won!

Yep, they have lost the last twelve games before today. And they were playing Denver, which is a good team, but one that… Continue

Part One: What Are Our Values?

I'm a fan of George Lakoff from his book Don't Think of an Elephant! and assorted videos of his presentations. His idea of frames presents good reasons why we can't just kick over a few theistic talking points (even when we're right) and expect to have believers drop everything and take up our banner. It doesn't matter that we have science and reason on our side; they'll keep inventing new ways to square their circles (to quote Hitchens) or find an excuse to duck out of the debate… Continue

Punk'd Again, By God!

The following was written last year, after a tornado ripped through a nearby area. I thought it would be enjoyed by my fellows in faithlessness.

Once more, that loving Christian god has shown his capricious sense of irony by hurling killer tornadoes at still another Florida trailer park. (Oops.. make that “mobile home community”…wouldn’t want to be p.i. in a godicle). The sick humor here is that this most recent assault was on a retirement community,… Continue

I know I'm not alone, but it sure feels like it.

Here in Springfield, Illinois the culture is predominantly religious based, so activities in the community that don't cost any money are awash with religious-based programs and activities that require exposure to "scripture."

I am aware of local Freethinker Meetups that gather once a month, but the last few I missed because of my work schedule. There is one Unitarian Universalist Congregation here, but I totally reject all religion and organizations that tolerate all… Continue

Eh, I like being optimistic, and I hate being wrong.

Lately, I am both.

I have slept 20 out of the last 24 hours, and I'm all set to do it again, dammit.

I did watch Righteous Kill and enjoyed it... it kept me awake, at least.

I am going to be optimistic about tomorrow.

Interesting day... or night, or whatever the hell it was.

I got to sleep about 19:00 last night, and woke up at... 22:30.

With the itchies.

Well, I had mentioned the three days without a shower, so I was able to stand up OK and shower, so I spent a half-hour soaking and scrubbing... no problem standing up at… Continue
