Porn vs. The Bible

"A group of atheist college students at the University of Texas San Antonio are causing a stir with their “Smut For Smut” campaign, an initiative to offer pornographic magazines in exchange for bibles.

The atheist agenda program is using the campaign to show that porn is “no worse” than what’s written in religious texts.

The campus is allowing the campaign to continue due to freedom of speech." -…

adolescent well-being & belief in God

I'm doing a lot of policy writing on youth and I keep coming across statements about the benefits of belief in God for teens. These statements claim that belief helps keep them out of trouble, makes them more resilient, etc.

I suspect this is not true - that belief in the supernatural makes people less resilient because they depend on a source of power outside of themselves. Attachment theory tells us that youth are more resilient when they have strong relationships involving…

The sad state of muslims (a generalization)

I do ask people to understand the following NOT as an insult but rather as an expression of deep sadness about the current state of things....

Frithjof Schuon once wrote:
"The intellectual - and thereby the rational - foundation of Islam results in the average Muslim having a curious tendency to believe that non-Muslims either know that Islam is the truth and reject it out of pure obstinacy, or else are simply ignorant of it and can be converted by elementary explanations; that…

Thrown out of church today

Thrown out of church today.  I volunteered for a scripture reading and might have misinterpreted a line or two in Exodus:  Then the LORD said to Moses, "I have buried dinosaur bones. Do not touch them, for I will use them to troll scientists for centuries to come."

Things I've Learned from Keeping Spiders

A couple of years ago I captured a seven legged female Wolf Spider at a local feed store. I took her home, set her up in a nice habitat, and studied her for several months. I named her Seven. She produced several egg sacs, but none of the eggs were viable. With the help of a professional biology professor in Green Bay Wisconsin, I identified her, and when she finally died, I sent her to him for positive identification, and after providing him with the specifics of her origins, he added her…

Evolution And Burden Of Proof — Open Letter to Pastor Ronn Johnson

Tonight as a part of the Project42 Convention, Minnesota Atheists president August Berkshire and Northwestern College professor Pastor Ronn Johnson had a debate, “Theism vs. Atheism: Which is the More Reasonable Worldview?”

I very much appreciate Ronn Johnson’s willingness to debate on this topic, and…

Christmas and other pagan/christian holidays

Being atheist, I still celebrate Christmas, easter, halloween, ect but I don't celebrate the birth or death of jesus, i want to start a new tradition in our family but not sure how to go about doing so. I want to donate money or christmas gifts or even open my house on christmas day thanksgiving and easter to those who don't get enough money to make a nice home made dinner for their family.

does anyone have any ideas how I would be able to do such a thing without having to…

I Want to Die a Slow and Painful Death.

Yes, I want to die a slow and painful death.

Just hear me out. No, I'm not going all emo on you. I'm not some sort of sick masochist. I hate pain. I cry when I get a paper cut on my finger (or across my cornea). Which is all the more reason why I want to die a slow and painful death.

This isn't like most people's initial response when they are asked how they would prefer to die. I think the majority has conceded to the age old response, "I want to die peacefully in my sleep."… Continue

atheism definition

(Sorry if this topic has been beat to death in a million other posts & blogs on AN, but here it is again anyway...)

I'm a bit hung up on definitions of atheism at the moment.  Such a basic word shouldn't be this fuzzy.

After pissing a bunch of people off by telling them that atheism technically means "lack of belief in existence of thesitic gods", but does not necessarily mean "belief that theistic gods definitely don't exist", I find that it's pretty hard to…

France fines Niqab wearers. A backward response to a draconian practice.

The incident I’m referring to is reported by the BBC here. Let’s get things straight. I am against being forced to wear any form of clothing because a religious culture tells you to. These religious cultures are historically male dominated, male enforced and male created, hence why the arbitrary rules on covering up tend to …

you are in control of your emotions

I often here people say im man im pissed that person made me upset, they will go through out there whole day dwelling on how this person  put them in this state of mind hell i used to think like this as well and  then it came to me im in control after all these are  my emotions  and there for i can control them.  so the next time i came across someone who i did not care for i would acknowledge  that i did not care for them but would remind my self that it is up to me how i feel. over time i… Continue

So, I'm very strange; when I have something I need to think about, I process my thoughts by writing about them. Rather than writing a whole new post here, I'm just going to post the essay that came out of my trying to decide to openly call myself an atheist. This was not written for any particular audience, and I haven't edited it, but I think I'll just post it as-is:

Recently, I had an interesting experience. I was chatting with some acquaintances while out at a…

Standing With Troy Davis As a Non-Believer

By Sikivu Hutchinson

This is a day of outrage for all who believe in justice and morality. The pending execution of Georgia Death Row inmate Troy Davis is an egregious reminder of the vicious cycle of immoral lynch mob justice that masquerades as due process in the United States, the exceptionalist "Christian Nation." With 25% of the world’s prison population, the U.S. has devolved into the largest penitentiary on the planet. For poor people of color, the revolving door of…

my revised and amended letter to the Pope ,and his buddies

Dear Head Priest

My name is Quinton Christie, and I’ve written a book about you, amongst other Lighthouses of Faith.

It is not a very nice book, because I point my grubby little fingers at you a lot, while I insult you, and your faith, for more than 200 pages.

I make fun of your gods, and your scriptures, and I call you all sorts of terrible names.

I bring to my reader’s attention all the inaccuracies, the mistakes, and the deliberate lies your… Continue
