We are Dancing Bears: An argument for why our cause is hopeless

If you want to understand a species, observe the behaviors of it's members over time. Bears have specific behaviors that have been exhibited throughout bear history. Bears forage, hibernate, are omnivorous, and so on. While the reactions of one bear in a particular situation may be unpredictable, the general behaviors of the species are extremely predictable.

Likewise, observation of the human species yields similar understanding. Throughout history humans have always organized into… Continue

The Invention of Lying

I saw The Invention of Lying this weekend and strongly encourage all non-believers to go see it. Ricky Gervais has done a great job of framing some key questions. A friend recommended it and it was halfway though before I understood why she thought I should see it.

Off to speak at UC Berkeley, San Francisco Atheists and UC Davis this next weekend through Tuesday. If you know of anyone in those areas, tell them to come see my presentation. Here a link to my calendar:…

Democracy is a problem (?), Islam a solution (!?)

One of the many views rampant in Afghanistan's educational institutions

Islam provides Afghans, specially the disillusioned and somewhat conspiracy minded youth, with the perfect placebo effect. Not that Islam has had any admirable track record in providing solutions to problems or at the very least bringing people together, but what is important to these people is the…

Robert Ingersoll describes my joy of freedom in much better prose

I copied this from Victor J. Stenger's new book, The New Atheist, Taking a Stand for Science and Reason.. The book is terrific. I am giving credit for everything but I also found the apparent entire works of Robert Ingersoll, on line, in toto. If anything ever described how I felt when I gave up magic, except for Buddha the Magician, of course, this is it. I love this quotation. Read the whole thing if you start.

When I became convinced that the Universe is natural-that… Continue

Hillsong on the run from Australian regulator

Contact Information

I'm leaving A/N because it's not the right fit for me (translation: some people are arseholes an I've got more important battles to fight and idiots to inform), but I'm not leaving the atheist internet as a whole!

You can still keep in touch with me in a shocking variety of ways. Remember when land line phone was the *only* way to reach someone? Hah! That's not even on the list, but everything else is.

Hillsong distancing itself from Mercy Ministries

One of my readers suggested I take a gander at the media release form Hillsong on Mercy Ministries, it is interesting to note that this release was apparently amended from earlier in the day -the previous release was apparently harsher. I have inserted my comments below:

ha ha you can't convert me na na naa...

These two passages pretty much make me damned for the eternity. I should get this tattooed on my left and right arm. (my crew cut and the tattoo's pretty much sets it stone)

Matthew 12:32 "Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

Mark 3:29 "But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty… Continue

More Poetry

This one is by me (Stephanie Sargent), like my Transitional Haikus.

Imagine insignificance,

fathomless night penetrated here ad there

by ghostly dots of light,

snowflakes on an empty asphalt parking lot

thinly spread by winter's first weak gasp,

vast black spaces beyond measure,

from their… Continue

Mercy Ministries Australia Closes

This text was posted on the Mercy Ministries Australia site yesterday:

It is with deep regret and sadness we have to inform you that Mercy Ministries in Australia is no longer in operation. Due to internal circumstances and challenges, Mercy Ministries Incorporated will be dissolved as an entity. We have encountered extreme financial challenges and a steady drop in our support base to the point where we are no longer financially viable. Mercy Ministries has been proud to serve the… Continue

I am supremely surprised to hear an athiest say that that the republican and democratic parties are two sides of the same coin, espaecially in this day and age. I firmly disagree as it pertains to religion. With the hijacking of the republicans by the reigious right the differences cannot be more disininct. These people want to teach creationism in schools and universities, which you know is not based on a centilla of scientific fact. They want to lock up mothers who abort featuses for what… Continue

Atheists in Alcoholics Anonymous

We atheists can remain sober without AA.

But, for the same reason that AA members with religious faith have a hard time finding serenity and sanity in their lives without the intermittent wisdom of others to listen to, we atheists find ourselves in the same position. We "take what we need" from the things we hear at the table in order to contemplate our sobriety, just as they do, and we "leave the rest" of the gobbledygook for others to ponder--just as they do.

I was… Continue
