Freedom to criticize ideas is a right

“To criticize a person for their race is manifestly irrational and ridiculous, but to criticize their religion, that is a right. That is a freedom. The freedom to criticize ideas, any ideas - even if they are sincerely held beliefs - is one of the fundamental freedoms of society. A law which attempts to say you can criticize and ridicule ideas as long as they are not religious ideas is a very peculiar law indeed."

Everything has a reason

So, when I act like I am frustrated

and slap my head,

I have a very good reason!

The belief system of Missouri church, Bible Baptist Temple.

http://www.bbtstjoe.com/

I went to this church last Sunday with some people in Missouri, and I must say it was the most insane, ridiculous service I've been to since Mars hill of Seattle. I've never actually met so many uneducated, willing to be ignorant, hateful people as the ones sitting next to me in the pews. The preacher spewed so much hate towards anyone of differing opinion (not that surprising of course) not just in his sermon, but also as…

Religion creates havoc in people's lives

I have often wondered why christians can use such dastardly deeds to achieve their ends. Obvious examples are The Crusades, The Inquisition, the destruction of the native cultures all around the globe, the acceptance of slavery and all its cruelties, the maltreatment of women, Blacks and GLBTQ. The pretense of loving those who are different than they reflects a hate that is palpable.

I have read the old and new testament from cover to cover. I noted the injustices and cruelty…

State Trooper: "Do you accept Jesus Christ as your savior?"

Indiana state trooper pulls woman over and asks 'do you accept Jesus Christ as your savior?'

Thanks Loren Miller and Atheist Nexus friends.

German SS Storm Trooper

How did this happen? Our police force is becoming nothing better than a bully, a thug, a menace to our population. Can we stand…

Free Will Inquiry

I gather that many of us deny the religious doctrine of free will. It is one of the seemingly rational aspects of religion and it simply feels right. Its negation removes our individuality and reduces our accomplishments and personalities to some kind of Buddhism-like ego-free status and as being undeserving of recognition.

I don't intend to open discussion as to its validity. It has been dealt with here ad nauseam.

But for any of you who deny it exists, how do you approach…

The Life of a Non-conformist

While short of being referred to as a curmudgeon, it's been called to my attention that I'm a non-conformist. Naturally, most atheists are categorized as evil non-c's. In a sense, we're rebels.

I've never thought of myself as any one of those. It's not on purpose that I'm "different". Perhaps, it's just a part of my personality. I can blame it on genetic predisposition or something, but I won't. That's not fair to my parents (both believers in god, by the way).

My…

Letter to Rabbi Rosin

FELLOW HERETICS: I AM ACTUALLY GOING TO SEND THIS LETTER (OR SOME VARIATION OF IT) TO THE RABBI IN MY MOTHER’S (AND MY FORMER) HOME TOWN. COMMENTS WELCOME.

Oct. 5, 2014

Dear Rabbi Rosin,

Thanks so much for visiting my Mother today. I know you’re really busy with the High Holidays. As in my youth, it’s still the only time everybody shows up, as if God doesn’t notice their non-observance the rest of the year, so you have to make the most of it. I do appreciate the time you…

Atheists Mostly Aren't Jerks

Last Sunday's topic ("Why Atheists Are Jerks") was popular, so here are further thoughts on the matter. Is the atheist community really any jerkier than average?

"Break a Leg"? Thanks, I'd Rather Not

I was watching a segment of CBS Sunday Morning today, when a segment was presented about a new Broadway production, “It’s Only a Play.”  During that piece, Lesley Stahl asked the cast about the expected fortunes of this new work and what the reviews might be.  The reactions of the players, whether feigned or real, bothered the hell out of me and were of the tenor of “you don’t EVER talk about that in the theater!”  Eventually, there was conversation on those issues, but that the superstition…

Ebola

The fear of endemic spread of disease is a familiar one. I heard stories about being born in my grandmother's bedroom while the house was quarantined for Scarlet Fever. The polio was a real fear, causing us to change how we played in the summer, what lakes not to swim in, how to protect ourselves. We didn't know how to prevent it, the consequences for those infected was dreadful and the crippling lasts a lifetime. My children were born in Sept, 1963 and Feb. 1964. Dr. Sabin's oral vaccine…

USA citizens are a colonized people. It begins with religion

The citizens of the United States of America have become colonized by factions that do not believe and do not act in ways that take the freedom of people as the fundamental foundation of our nation. Rather, religion and money colonize all aspects of our lives. It buys our government, it buys our political parties, it buys our votes. If we are to change things, it means we must think and act like people who think critically who act politically. Those who are colonized, who resisted the misuse…

The Myth That Grass Causes Stupidly

If anyone happened to catch the radio or TV show “Imus in the Morning” show last week, they presented a bit where two regulars on the show interviewed random passersby and asked the questions, “Do you smoke grass?” Upon a positive answer they’d then ask questions a third-grader should know, “Who’s the Secretary of State?” or “Where on the map is Afghanistan?” They then played dimwit answers of apparent potheads, judging by tattered jeans and disheveled hair: “I dunno” and “Isn’t that in the…

In Broken Images

He is quick, thinking in clear images;

I am slow, thinking in broken images.

He becomes dull, trusting to his clear images;

I become sharp, mistrusting my broken images,

Trusting his images, he assumes their relevance;

Mistrusting my images, I question their relevance.

Assuming their relevance, he assumes the fact,

Questioning their relevance, I question the fact.

When the fact fails him, he questions his senses;

When the fact fails…
