A picture I took of what appears to be the almighty Flying Spaghetti Monster on my iron. The image has reassured me that life is going to be good.

If our goal is to achieve peace and prosperity for all humans, to eliminate poverty and advance science and health for all, advancing our species to higher plains of understanding...
One of our greatest enemies is our own tendency towards hyperbole. "Cheney is Satan" is equally as unhelpful as "Obama is Hitler" to the cause of either the "left" or the "right".
I need to avoid it myself, I tend to make idiotic, emotionally charged statements like "religious people love to… Continue

Alternate title: Instinct
Long ago the Thunderbird brought rain to Vancouver island, the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe remembers. But if you ask Marlon Lowe, age thirty-two, he’ll tell you that Thunderbird’s no god. He still remembers that summer evening in 1977 when those two black thunderbirds swooped into his backyard and tried to carry him away.
Can there be any truth to this tale? On the other side of the Atlantic, Zimbabwe fishermen tell tales of the… Continue

Many of you proably have already enjoyed episodes of Mr. Deity or the Youtube ramblings of Edward Current. These people have it pretty much wrapped up. Forget having to read Dawkins or Hitchens or anything I might have to say about why theism is, frankly, ludicrous.
So, instead, I have decided to attempt restrict myself to discussions of the 'big questions' (and some smaller ones) with the complete assumption that nontheism is a given. I may feel compelled to rant occasionally - but… Continue

New post summarizing and describing What is wonderism?
"I've gotten at least a few comments from people along the lines of, "I'm still not sure what to make of wonderism." In my attempts to explain it, I find myself writing longer and longer articles, with more and more detail. Sometimes it's harder to express an idea in just a few words, than in many words! Pascal's famous quote comes to mind:… Continue

For many the worlds oceans have little consequence on their daily lives. They are deemed beautiful but a resource that can be fully taken advantage of. Indeed we as the humans also have the tendancy of treating the oceans with little respect, polluting it with sewage, chemicals and rubbish.
However my motivation here, is not to complain and blame others but to simply describe some of the issues and science I come across in my daily life as an environmental… Continue

Evolution or any scientific consensus that challenges established conventions and dogmas is bound to face resistance in any society. In the US for example, there is a raging war of words between creationists or intelligent design proponents on the one side and the overwhelming majority of the scientific community, who argue for evolution; on the other side. In Europe evolution, as a scientific explanation of how we and other living beings got to where we are and how life got its complexity, is… Continue

Just watched the movie Angel & Demons.
Now I'm not a review guy, just pointing a few things out in it.
Good movie btw.
In the movie a scientist ultimately saves a church and city. Yay! The church goes on about how God sent him to same them and a bunch of mumbo jumbo and he just says 'I don't think so.' It was so funny. Even more laughs come from the christian reviews that I read saying that the movie was about how faith triumphs overall.
Excuse me......… Continue

I been reading a lot of blogs on here about death and The afterlife so it's been on my mind awhile.
I would love to live forever but the more I think about it the more I just don't see how it's possible.
The thought of non existence scares the crap out me to think about but I been reading one blog that stated the best way to overcome a fear is to face it.
So, I am going to write about it and As always when I write I for some reason learn more and really think about it. So that's… Continue

1) Note that many fundamentalist groups are predominantly concerned with control of public behaviour- how people dress, whether they go to religious meetings... Even though their religious doctrine often is primarily concerned with personal faith or commitment, and in some cases explicitly condemns the temptation to establish onself as judge of others' behaviour (this is particularly salient in fundamentalist Christianity and Islam).
2) Some… Continue

I am an avid fan of day dreaming, and unlike many people who muse of friendships, potential meetings with celebrities or other frivolous thoughts to occupy a bus journey, I happen to love thinking about science. Yes you could say this a post about me admiting a tendancy for geeky thoughts but I want to write about an opinion/ concept I have been thinking alot about lately.
The fact of evolution, is clear to many, and I do not want to spend my time here… Continue

In his carefully-crafted movie, Mr. Gore leads off with what many consider the most persuasive data: 650,000 years of correlation between CO2 and warming/cooling trends. Problem is, that data actually shows that the trends in atmospheric CO2 trail the warming-- by a few hundred years. Clearly CO2 is not in the climatic driver's seat.
I have seen a response that goes something like this: "OK, so CO2 didn't cause those temperature variations, but it was a positive feedback, amplifying… Continue
