Mathematical Deep Structuralism

In the last chapter of "Galileo's Finger," Professor Peter Atkins invites us to consider the view that mathematics is a product of the mind, but also a reflection of the underlying structure of the universe.  Mathematics is hard-wired into the brain, because we are the products of a logically self-consistent universe.  Thus mathematics maps so neatly onto the universe because our internal logic is an expression of the deeper structure.

On the deep structuralist view, the universe… Continue

what if?

Is it all right to do nothing with you life? Simple question. What harm would come if you simply woke up in the morning and went to work then came home at night and enjoyed yourself? Working, of course, is an essential aspect of living. If you want to have a place to come home to that is your own, where you can be alone, then you have to work to make the money necessary to sustain you own life. You may not want to, you may find ways of getting around working. But experience has taught me…

My Annual Epilepsy Awareness Month Rant

The World Health Organisation has a list of consequences of living in a rural area with epilepsy (even the USA, including social ones, as the Bible expressly notes epilepsy is caused by demon possession.)

How we go to be the way we are...

As an introduction, I'll just copy and paste the post we made when we "came out of the closet" as atheists, after leaving our position at our church and moving to China:

FAQ on why I left the church (Brian’s Story)

Brian worked as Children’s Pastor at Freshwater Community Church in St. Bonifacius MN from 2005 to 2011. He and his wife and their 3 children currently live in China. This is their story of deconversion.

I wonder

One night, I was helping my 1 1/2 year old niece brush her teeth. When we were done, we walked out and I turned off the bathroom lights. The room lights were dim and only the table lights were on. When she turned back and looked at the bathroom, she was transfixed, curious and looked a little frightened. I watched her for a while. She has never watched a horror movie, we never talked about ghost or anything fancy like that yet the dim room has made her feel a sense of uncertainty and fear.…

Are you dreading the start of the Christmas season?

With Thanksgiving behind us, (& its glorification of overeating), we're officially into the Christmas season with its emphasis on overconsumption and the supposed birth of a god's son.  What a waste of time and money, especially considering all the pressing planetary problems.  Ho ho, I wish it were all over.

Mowing the Lawn; Some Thoughts About the Conflict in Gaza

On occasion we come up with a term or an expression to describe some geopolitical reality, it makes it's way around the news, maybe even history books, and somehow seemingly without anyone actually taking the time to think tangibly about the implications, the phrase has been inducted into our collective consciousness - now it's normal, like peanut butter and jelly.

I've always thought of nuclear deterrence or Mutually Assured Destruction in this way. How do such sane…

The God Virus now in Audio Format

The God Virus is now in audio format.  Here are a couple of comments from listeners on

What was one of the most memorable moments of The God Virus?

I enjoyed the giving of actual virus names and then showing how multiple religions act in that manner. I was able to learn about both…

Follow-up on Patraeus

Alan, I’m 68, so we’re just about the same age and probably have gone through similar experiences, especially during the time of the Viet Nam War. To me, the late ‘60s were life changing, to say the least.

I believe the answer to the problem we’ve been discussing lies in understanding Richard Dawkins’ selfish gene theory. I’m convinced evolutionary biology is the key to relieving much of humanity’s misery and suffering.

In the animal world following genetic impulses,… Continue

Koran is only for the Arabs

Koran is only for the Arabs, not for other nations or races. It is an Arabic book. In Koran, there are:

27. We have cited in this Koran for mankind every ideal; that they may take heed (Throngs).

28. An Arabic Koran, without any defect, so they may become righteous (Throngs).

All men of the world do not say in Arabic.…

Reason #1467 I love my wife

A while back we were standing in line in Costco and we look over and standing in a nearby line is an older fellow in a peculiar outfit. He was wearing cargo pants made out of a fabric with the American Navy logo all over it. He had white hair and a white handlebar moustache (to give you an idea of what I meant by "older fellow"). He was also sporting a white t-shirt with the following on the front in large letters:

"God Fearing

Gun Owning
