You always hear a story about someone turning their life to God or "finding Jesus" after a terrible shortcoming or battle with addiction. It usually gets me thinking about Former Governor/Wrester Jesse Ventura's quote "Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers." The reason why? When I think of my pre-atheist self, I think of a very weak-minded person who thrived for excuses. Do these people need a congregation to make themselves feel special… Continue

So I've been spending a lot of time working on my website
this past week since I have a lot of free time. Working at a university has one huge bonus: I get paid days off whenever the students are off. I'm a little half way over my 16 days off.
Slowly the site is gaining in popularity and I have been noticing a degradation in its performance. Aside from the prepackaged popup library I'm using when you cursor over the article links, everything… Continue

taken from my blog
Apparently some people dont’ understand how reality and arguments work when it comes to debating religion, so I’ve decided to try and explain. An argument about religion has to follow the same rules that any argument has to follow. Some people blatantly try to ignore this, and it only hurts their claim.
Firstly, when you make a statement, you are making a claim. “I ate cereal… Continue

A recent article
in Nature magazine presents evidence that the last universal common ancestor (LUCA) of life on Earth was probably not a hyperthermophile after all. New molecular-genetics results show the cell type all living cells can trace their own origin back to in a clear genetic line - LUCA - was not a strong heat-loving microbe. Up until now, the accepted model in evolutionary genetics was that LUCA shared… Continue

Freethinking Winter Solstice Sign & Billboard
To go up in Olympia!
Nov. 26, 2008
Tis the season . . . to bring some freethinking cheer to Olympia!
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a state/church watchdog and the nation's largest association of atheists and agnostics, is making its mark on Olympia in December.
In addition to erecting a jaunty "Reason's Greetings" billboard in downtown Olympia on East 5th Avenue (cross street Jefferson), the Foundation and its… Continue

No Evangelizing At Recruiting Sites
December 28, 2008McClatchy-Tribune Information Services
The Pentagon is cracking down on evangelizing at its national network of recruit processing centers, telling religious groups that it won't permit proselytizing at the sites.
A new regulation quietly distributed last month to commanders of the 65 centers says that religious literature and publications produced by other "non-federal entities" may be made available to… Continue

Disturbing things afoot in small town America--imagine that! Vjack at Atheist Revolution commented on this apparent fiasco in-waiting last week (links provided later--I am not home and am having technical difficulties at the moment), and I guess it's not going away. In fact, for the poor guy who complained (and rightly so), it's gotten much worse.
Read the Rest - Links not on blog...heh...but if you go there, you'll know where to… Continue

From now on, I will be using this term to refer to those people (including myself when appropriate) who are not able to distinguish reality from fantasy, for whatever reason. This ranges from the operational reality-challenged (like those who believe in supernatural entities, for example, and can still walk around and pass for normal) to the curl-up-in-a-ball-paranoid-delusional reality-challenged.
It's okay. It happens to the best of us, on occasion.
Wow. I could SO not… Continue

This was brought to my attention by my former business partner. Now some of us were in uniform prior to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Well, starting back in the early 90's the military started to take DNA samples of all it's service members. The reason for this was simple. If you got killed in combat, and had lost your dog tags or had decomposed, they could use your DNA to identify your body and bring you home. No more Unknown Soldiers. That meant… Continue

Another Christmas season as come and gone--the 'War on Christmas' is over, for this year. Be sure to look for it again about mid-November next year. I've come across more than one 'article' asking why atheists hate or fear Christians and Christianity so much--apparently, we purposefully get particularly riled up this time of year. I'd like to take a stab at answering this question, but first, I should explain that it isn't even a valid question. As in, you holy folks aren't asking the right… Continue

Yesterday my girlfriend needed some gas for her car. Right now financially it is tight for both of us and I help her out whenever I can. So getting her some gas to go back and forth to work is a no brainer. Well its morning and we're both peckish so I send her into the store to give the clerk there my gas card and tell him we're going to buy some other things. Well she comes out and says I have to show the guy my ID. That struck me as odd because if I… Continue

Hello fellow thinkers.
I'm a new member but have been reading many fine atheist sites, including this one, for years, although I'm not overly sure why, there's nothing new in this age-old argument, if you could reason with believers, there would be no believers. I suppose I just like to be reminded I'm not the only person on this over-infested rock that still has the ability to reason, well, that and the fact that reading about whatever the latest moronic thing the believers are doing… Continue

I'm interested in who is spreading the crap statement "Adolf Hitler was an atheist..."
I am also gathering sources to refute this... Mein Kampf would be a good example.
From a Google Search of "Hitler Atheist"
Besides the insinuation that WE are just like Hitler, it's the fact that Christians will lie.… Continue

isn't new, but a friend posted the link to Facebook and it reminded me how great the video is. Dr. Kenneth Miller is a cell biologist who lectures on evolution and science education, and participated as an expert witness for the good guys at the Kitzmiller v. Dover School District trial. In this segment where he addresses a group of high school students, Miller does a masterful job of… Continue

In discussing the most likely effects of a warming climate shift, tropical storms have been a weak link. The thermomechanics controlling formation and evolution of tropical cyclonic storms - hurricanes and typhoons - are ridiculously complicated. Predictions are very hard to make, and require loads of data that take decades to gather.... but there's no way to rush the weather.
Tropical storms are formed ultimately by temperature differences between the tropics and the higher… Continue
