Jews, Crucifixion, and Blame

It's good to visit fantastic worlds of Christian web-sites. A recent one said that blaming the Jews for the death of Jesus was unChristian and with no biblical support. Blaming all Jews, or any people for that matter, for the death of any real or imagined person some 2000 years ago is nonsensical and is usually for dangerous purposes. However the "no biblical support" - you have got to be joking.

So I revisited the Gospel passion narratives as well as one of Paul's letters in… Continue

2009 - 2010 A new year

Well, after arguably enduring the worst decade in the last 50 years. My hopes are that, the next decade would be slightly better. 2009 was a sick year full of false hope and plenty of disappointment, anguish and agony. But merely putting forth a packet of good wishes will not change a thing. I am not very optimistic about the future, how do you think?

Does Quantum Physics Prove God?

A Druid online acquaintance of mine sent me an an email on another site stating for one thing that "Interestingly, quantum physics has proven the interconnectedness and the existence of Divine Universal Energy that the mystics have spoken of for thousands of years."

I responded in my next letter with "'Quantum physics has PROVEN the interconnectedness and the existence of Devine Universal Energy?'. I've seen several documentaries and lectures that included quantum physics and… Continue

For the New Year - How I quit smoking without drugs, therapy, or very much in the way of will power.*

A little over fifteen years ago my brother and I calculated how much we smoked over the course of our lives so far. A cigarette contains about a gram of combustible material (not all tobacco.) That's about 28 and a third cigarettes per ounce. That's about 454 cigarettes per pound or 23 packs per pound. (people in civilized countries that use the metric system can do the math much more easily.)

It turns out that, in ten years, I had smoked about 180 pounds of combustible cigarette… Continue

Is nothing sacred ...

One thing about being an atheist that is crystal clear to me is that the realization that this is the only life I have makes it many times more precious to me than it was when I believed in an after-life. Actually, believed isn't really the term. Indoctrinated, imprinted, bamboozled - these are more accurate terms.

Nevertheless, the concept of immortality cheapens life. So, in a sense, all religions that offer it reduce this life's sanctity. (If you wish to… Continue

The Skeptic's Prayer

I did a little creative writing project. tell me how you like it!

The Skeptic's Prayer:

Hey god,

I don't know if you exist or not but if you do and created me the way I am I thank you for that because I like being able to think for myself. I don't know what you're like or if you speak English since we are praying ot the Hebrew god and all, but I have a couple family members here who feel comforted by me praying so I'll proceed to thank you for a couple… Continue

To No Man or God: Restating my atheist manifesto for 2010

Okay, I'm jumping the gun a little here. Even for Australia, if only by twelve hours or so. But in the usual bout of New Year's nostalgia and contemplation I was compelled to go back to the very first time I became properly angry about religion - the point where I first arrived at the edge of agnosticism and glanced into the depths of proud, firmly-realised anti-theism. As 2010 looms (no... that makes it sound foreboding. But "dawns" is a bit too flowery, and premature in any case), I am moved… Continue

Blood Moon Chapter 2 Rewritten

Blood Moon Chapter 2 rewrtten

I was dissatisfied with the existing chapters, the story wasn’t bad but the writing was terrible so I rewrote them.

“I do apologize to you young man but I can not go with you. I am banished.” The old man said.

“My master has the full authority of the Shia Empress Djamila Attia.” Iosif said. “What ever you where banished for-”

“I banished my self!” The old man… Continue

A Fair and Balanced look at Armageddon.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.

By Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

With so many one-sided versions of pre-creation, creation, the original schism and the on-going fight for human souls that is to end with the battle for the title of ... Ruuuler - of the Earth; it is refreshing to read a story that takes both sides into account. We are given this unique perspective through the eyes of two agents from opposing regimes stationed on earth with… Continue

Escaping the Dichotomy

World religions build their theology based on a dichotomy of good and evil, light and darkness. One cannot exist without the other, unless of course (like in Christianity) the absolute good overpowers the absolute evil. And so, this is how many people have come to view the world as we know it.

However, this dichotomy, as you may know, is hardly productive and mostly a polarising force. Anyone in the United States during WWII and/or the Cold War will remember this - or anyone who… Continue

911, Hitler, facial hair, gay, African, Asian, creature, grace, soul, spiritual, and the usurpation of valid styles and terms.

In June of 2001 I was laid off from my design job in Manhattan in the bloodbath that ensued when the internet bubble burst. Bloodbath was the term then. The term reverted to its more literal form only a few months later.

On Monday, September tenth, I interviewed for a great job only miles from my house. It went really well. They asked me back Wednesday for what could only be the 'how much?' interview. Wednesday was my daughter's birthday. Could anything feel more… Continue

Becoming Free

Blame it on my parents. They always told me to "think for myself". I doubt they ever considered what would happen if I really did that.

Now, I suspect what they meant was, "Think what we tell you but do it in your own words." Too late. When I was 13, I began to question everything and soon the total absurdity of religion became apparent.

Because I have been “encouraged” (forced) to read the bible many times, it was easy for me to see the contradictions in the book, what… Continue

Hilldale Baptist: A Poem

I wrote this for a creative writing class. It got really high reviews from my classmates and I thought that you might enjoy reading it.

"Hilldale Baptist"

by Aidan Maslow

Here is the home of the fundies,

healthy development is far from mundane.

Oppression is free on Sundays,

Authoritarianism joyfully unconstrained.

Their doctrine is creation,

evolution – a chimera for the lame.

Evidence is truth imitation.

Why… Continue

Why It’s Okay To Call Ourselves Atheists (And Why We Should)

A hotly-debated topic in the worldwide community of purposeful unbelievers is whether or not "atheist" is the right title to use when representing ourselves to the public. As I've written before, the word strictly applies to only one position of belief: do Gods exist? Because of this, great diversity can exist in the atheist community. An atheist can be a conservative or a liberal. She can be a skeptic or a believer in pseudoscience. She can accept Anthropogenic Global Warming or deny it. She… Continue

The Onion admits Christian bias

Here is the cover of the most recent print edition of The Onion. I scanned and uploaded it to my blog since it doesn't appear to be in the online version. I think it pretty much sums up the situation for all major media outlets in the US (but ironically enough, not The Onion itself since they often publish irreligious… Continue
