With the recent shooting at a school in Newtown Connecticut and the shooting in Aurora Colorado violent video games are in the news again. The old men in the old media are blaming violent video games as they always do when a shooting hits the national news.
Violent video games have been the target of old media and conservatives for years. They will spout dubious studies and claim there is a link. They will blame any act of violence on violent video games even if the perpetrator never…

After solving the last clue of the Mayan puzzle and fighting Xecotcovach the Demon-bird servitor of Alom, or as he is known to his friends "Face-Gouger" to a standstill I reached for the lever. The clock was ticking down from 10 seconds. It was just two seconds before the apocalypse when I pulled it with all my strength and averted the end of the world.

In the philosophical competition of worldviews many Christians use the "free will defense" as a way to excuse their god's apparent moral negligence in this world. Supposedly the value of free will is greater than whatever evils may result from establishing moral beings who have this opportunity to do both good and evil and suffer or profit as a result of it. I've taken the liberty of assembling all of my analysis of this popular move of theirs. Enjoy.…

Here's the question: Should I (we) be celebrating the Winter Solstice (Dec. 21), or even the Summer Solstice (June 21)?
I know we recognize the date--barely. But what should we do with the fact?
It's rather contradictory to say it's "the first day of winter", season-wise, yet "celebrate" the fact the daylight hours will begin lengthening. The former sounds bleak, the latter, optimistic. I'm going with the bright side.
We all know how much ancient civilizations worshiped…Continue
Many people around here in the Middle East seem to be under the impression that the United States is the birthplace and haven of atheism.[Read more at godlessteens.com]

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, your alleged “evidences” for a god do not stand up very well to criticism. You named quite a few, so let’s take them one by one, shall we?[read more at godlessteens.com]

It's been a hectic week here in north central Indiana. Right now, we're preparing for our first winter storm. Lots of wind and rain with snow forecast for overnight. My plans for attending the annual middle school christmas breakfast tomorrow is on hold, depending on weather conditions. Retirees, like myself, are always invited. I like to see my old compadres.
I have good news and bad, then good. First, I did purchase a new truck this week. I've always been partial to small trucks,…Continue

A couple of prayer requests for the President came across my desk a few weeks ago. At first I just deleted them because they came from my religious friends and I didn’t want to offend them even though they probably never considered that the people on their mailing list may be of different religions or no religion at all. It also sought “Prayer Warriors” to combat the forces…Continue
The recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut is one of the most horrible in recent memory. The actions of that young man were as incomprehensible as they were inexcusable and we as a country need to learn from what happened to better protect ourselves and our children. What is even more inexcusable and, in my mind just as disgusting, is the way gun control advocates use this tragedy to support their agenda.
As the details unfold we are starting to see there was a lot of anger and…Continue
Said treasure is at a fellow-traveler's site: Atheist Republic. Therein I have found a gallery of pictures with quotes which are truly FABULOUS. They include quotes I have not encountered before, direct and powerful quotes which I am sopping up the way a dry sponge absorbs water. Consider the following:…
I'm writing something and I have to state what religion says about WHY were here. How does God answer that? Why am I here?
So far I've put down: 1 to worship god. 2 to exert your free will and be judged by it.
It's been so long, I can't remember what the religious purpose of life is. But I do remember all those stupid "Got Purpose?" signs everywhere. Can someone enlighten me.
I have one fb friend who posts tons of religious garbage and also happens to fall for every other internet hoax, such as the old "Craig shergold make a wish foundation". Usually my counterpoints go unanswered, and it looks like this one might stay like this as well. My reply is pretty tame, and I think it needs to be to reach people. Nonetheless, I'm curious how you would have responded. Also, this is a headsup, as this one will probably continue to make the rounds.…Continue
Just what does it mean to be an atheist? Richard Dawkins proposed a sliding scale of theistic probability:
Here is an excellent post by James Morrison, a world religions teacher on sex and religion. He looks at some of the crazy ideas that religionists hold, especially about masturbation. I wonder if he will actually talk about the views of the various religions on masturbation, including the ancient Egyptian god Autm, who masturbated his two children into existence?…Continue

Please take a look at Teens Without God, Ask an Atheist. Don't let the "Teens" part turn you off. Many of the questions I answer on this site are relevant to all ages like this one: "Can an atheist still enjoy Christmas?" or "How do I deal with my religious in-laws?" The website is a product of the American Humanist Association. I have answered dozens of questions from people all over the…Continue
