Evolutionary Psychology

Evolutionary Psychology

I was honored to be able to be give the April presentation at the North Texas Skeptics.

I wanted to discuss something that was a legitimately debated topic in science, so I covered evolutionary psychology.

Darwin's theory of evolution is not considered controversial in science. But its implications on the development of the human mind over time are considered controversial by many legitimate critics.

To recap, evolution by natural… Continue

Tea Baggin for beginners....

Last week on April 15th I was at the dentists office. Nothing major, just a check up. Well, in this town I’m in FOX is on every TV that’s in a gym or restaurant or waiting room. They won’t turn it on MSNBC nor CNN….but only FOX. Yes, this is a small reactionary town that I’m currently in. In fact, the highway bypasses the place. It use to go through the town, but now it just goes past it.

Well, as you well know, it was the “Tea Bag” day. And of course, those there were calling themselves,… Continue

Heavy science pondering...

...I stepped outside for a smoke at work yesterday and overheard the following convo that cracked me up:

Brother A: "So what does happen when the irresistable force meets the immovable object?"

Brother B: "Well,I ain't sure. But somebody gone end up shittin' they pants."

Too funny!

Next time I pass a car with one of these symbols, I'll have something to smile about.

Sound and Fury

Everywhere I go - everywhere - I am surrounded by the din of "g0d, g0d, g0d" at every turn. I can't not hear it, I can't turn it off. It drives me crazy. Even just now in the commons I hear a conversation going on a few seats over about how we need a savior, about how gawd will help you, about how you need christ and blah, blah, blah... It's a private conversation, nothing harmful but... I wish I could go for one whole day without hearing or reading about g0d. That is the root of my… Continue

the trouble with god

a really good example of why no one should believe in fables .

An all-powerful perfect being creates the world, but he screws it up so bad, he wipes it out with a flood and starts over.

Somehow, flooding it and starting over didn't work, so the all-powerful perfect being gets himself born as a human, gets himself killed, and that's supposed to fix things.

But this all-powerful perfect screwup still didn't fix things, so he promises to come back and blow… Continue

Smiling Pirates

Did anyone see the pictures of the captured Somali pirate in the news recently, as he was being brought to New York for prosecution? It is quite revealing and shows clearly that the problems that we are facing in this world are not as clear cut and easy to parse as all that.

To begin with, he is a teenager...a minor. He will be tried as an adult, and I would agree that the crimes of priracy would normally hold such a stipulation.

But, did you see him smile? He looked… Continue

Two Kinds of Non-Theists

There seem to be two kinds of non-theists. The first kind (type 1) are those who were raised that way. Their parents were not religious and didn’t teach or encourage religious participation. The second (type 2) are those who were infected early in life and had to endure religious indoctrination and intimidation through their most formative years.

These two groups often have difficulty understanding one another. Type 1 non-theists often think religion is just to obviously ridiculous… Continue

Ken Ham and the Answers in Genesis Video

Ken Ham wrote an opinion piece about the new AiG video with the young boy pointing a gun at the camera.

I responded here: RationalityNow - Ken Ham Confirms His Moral Bankruptcy

For those of you who are interested. :-)

Episode 195: Keeping the Faith

She wants, terribly, to believe; to be comforted. A man, recently a celebrity for doing good, decides that she will be the one he saves. It doesn't sound too hard, really. She needs to believe. So why does he fuck it up so badly?

What existential "Meaning and Purpose" do theists have which Atheists do not?

I often hear from theists that they could never become an atheist because they are afraid that they would have no purpose and meaning to their lives.

While I was a dedicated Christian I do not recall what was so meaningful and purposeful about my life during this stage. Nor do I recall why I feared that these feelings would dissipate if I ever lost my faith. The reality, if my memory is not too distorted, is that this part of my life was not particularly happy or especially… Continue

The "Daily Devotional" combatant

A few weeks ago I came accross a woman who decided that she would post her daily devotionals in what was then an almost entirely secular group in the sense that no one else had ever thought to post religous topics, though I still have no idea how many believers vs non believers there are in the group. The theme of the online group was "a few good women" and I would imagine she felt that in order to be considered a good woman, she would show everyone how strong her faith in god and Christ is.… Continue

We Shall Remain

Tonight the second installment in the five part series We Shall Remain airs on PBS. "We Shall Remain" is a "provocative multi-media project that establishes Native history as an essential part of American history".

"At the heart of the project is a five-part television series that shows how Native peoples valiantly resisted expulsion from their lands and fought the extinction of their culture… Continue

Thanks to many of the biogots in my community, I looked and found this wonderful site!

Last fall I found a forum called Tuscarawas County Online which is where I live, so I was pretty excited to talk to people from my own area. It was pretty cool, a mix of libs and cons that gave good agruments and tastfully agreed to disagree at the end of the day.

But then some new members joined and it became a right-wing nut job site for them to make fun of liberals. They bashed us and anyone who wasn't overly sarcastic and a conservative (which I am neither). They did alot of… Continue
