"Recently I talked to a man with a fantastic amount of faith. Not one shade of doubt crept into his animated description of man's origin and destiny. He was an evolutionist I met on an airplane. With incredible confidence he bridged the eons of prehistoric time to explain the… Continue

"Why not teach an alternative to Evolution in the class room, why not teach Intelligent Design?" They ask....Turn this around, 'Why should alternatives to Evolution be taught, why teach Intelligent Design?' Just because it is the opinion of any scientists that Intelligent Design could be true does not make IDH a scientific idea. "Show me the evidence" is what Science is saying. "Prove the Creator" otherwise the universe is just a stack of fantastic probability. The mechanical nature of the… Continue

Just today I was reading about two things: what it was like for others to find atheism, and a recent music discussion under the forum. And because of this I noticed something about myself that others might find interesting. My family had no problems with me being an atheist, in fact I was brought up without a religion and grew into atheism, quite natural and my parents were supportive. The thing they couldn't understand is why I liked metal
To understand this, you need to… Continue

Last week the survey got a major plug on another site (well, probably NOT just another site...) and the numbers have been crazy: as of 2:00PM today (the Solstice!) the count is just over 7000, with nearly 92% of the people completing the survey. I am stunned and more than a little humbled by this response and now have enough cases to do some serious cross-cultural analysis as well as the regional analysis that was the original impetus for the research.

Oh, bloody hell it's cold outside! Right now it's 9 degrees with a wind chill factor of -12 degrees. We got almost a foot of snow yesterday and may get as much as eight inches today with gusting winds up to 40 miles per hour.
I've got to move out of this frelling frigid place! Cold weather does not mix well with fibromyalgia, arthritis, or lupus. My aches and pains have aches and pains.

But, as one might expect, they do a poor job. Why is science reporting always so bad in the mainstream media?
The CNN article suffers from two flaws: 1) artificial two-sidedness, and 2) lack of context. In the first instance, the article attempts to present the issue of an institutionalized carbon trading market in the US as another “teach both sides” issue, where proponents and opponents get equal time. Fair enough, you might say, except that without a skeptical examination both… Continue

ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS — A True Christmas Story
Long ago, country peoples from the Neolithic onwards celebrated the winter and summer solstices as the prime celestial events of significance to agriculturists in need of a simple calendar. 21st December is the year’s shortest day. For some days about then in the northern-hemisphere, the day length between sunrise and sunset hardly changes, and the point of sunrise on the far horizon scarcely changes either between any of the days from… Continue

For those who like to keep score when NASA research produces something of major practical benefit, here is NASA’s choice for their Invention of the Year for 2007
: Polyimide foam. NASA picked this winner from a long list of candidates, apparently. Polyimide foam is a kind of high-efficiency insulator, capable of resisting sound, heat and cold, and was developed for applications in space. Now that polyimide… Continue

A while back, some friends of mine and I went to see "Religulous" in Indianapolis with the Center for Inquiry. It was a great show, great conversation, and a great time over all.
On the way home, we were discussing the topic of "faith" and what that entails. Key players here were Margaret (sitting in the back seat) and Jon (driving), and myself (passenger seat).
The discussion was whether or not Atheism takes faith.
I have always been of the opinion that Atheism… Continue

-Warning: Nothing smart to say, just updating for my friends-
It is finally winter break and I have Brent (my partner) all to myself.
He has had tons of Xmas concerts (all secular) to conduct for the past 2 weeks and our time has been limited. We also swore off MySpace and the like (Yes, the Nexus) for AN ENTIRE WEEK along with TELEVISION (except for Sanctuary, Chase and Estate of Panic! - best shows) in order to stimulate creativity. We played games and baked… Continue

Hi everyone! It is good to be here with like-minded people. As an atheist for 25 years, I am finally becoming increasingly active in this cause. I believe in the advancement of humanity. Religion, I feel, suppresses this.
This time of year, outside of "easter," truly concerns me. The hypocrisy, commercialism, consumerism, and religious thumping bring out the worst and most annoying of even the slightest religious. Why does "charity" increase only during this holiday? Doesn't these… Continue

I haven't dated anyone in a year or so. Maybe this is causing my mom to think my gay is over or something. But really I doubt it, she's just totally delusional. This isn't the first time her or anyone in my family has made comments like this. Ok so..
Me: *waves a hand at the open door and says "smoky" because the neighbor is burning leaves again*
Me: It's smoky. Can I close the door?
Mom: Hahaha! I thought there was some guy out there and you were saying oooh… Continue

i asked brother richard why the hell did the surey need to know anyones sexual oriantation , this is what his reply was ,
Brother Richard has sent you a message on Atheist Nexus.
Hey, thanks for the question. One of the primary purposes for the survey is comparing "coming out" atheist with "coming out" gay. This is the only reason for such questions.
SO i ask again why and what the hell does that have to do with atheism,?
am i the only one that finds… Continue

I look at my search engine results quite a bit and have noticed that several people find my blog by typing in the phrase, “How to come out as an atheist” so I’ve decided to write a bit from my own experience for those who are seeking inspiration.
Step One: Realize you’re an atheist. This may seem to be a given but for the longest time people will have the knowledge that they don’t believe in a god and still label themselves otherwise. You’re an atheist. If you can’t share this with… Continue

We are all very excited about the upcoming holidays. Our presents are packed (and most of them shipped / delivered), the tree and lights are up and decorated, we've made cookies, and we've dove headfirst into the Winter Season media: The Grinch, Bing Crosby, Ultra Lounge, Muppet Christmas, etc.
The thing is, although all of this looks like the holiday we commonly… Continue
