It's Hard to Be an Atheist on Christmas

Atheism and Christmas: Should Atheists Ignore Christmas or Celebrate It?

This was a good read. It's inspired me to write about my own personal experience with this. I've been struggling with this a lot in the past 4-5 years.

My family is religious, but not overly so. Methodism is one of most liberal denominations of… Continue

Is There a God?

Tonight, the debate is on between Richard Dawkins and John Lennox at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, AL. I'm incredibly excited. I wasn't able to get tickets to this event, but there are going to be multiple casts of it available to watch/listen to.

Neat New Labels

This post was imported from Livejournal on 2008.07.18

We all love labels. Who doesn't? It's a way to tell someone a lot of information about a person without having to explain a lot. This can get us into a lot of trouble when labels are ambiguous or in transitional states. For example, atheism/theism/agnosticism. The zeitgeist right now seems to be the following:

-Atheists actively believe there are no gods.

-Agnostics aren't sure if there are any gods, but are open… Continue

Religion and Football

This post was imported from Livejournal on 2008.07.18

This guy is hilarious. And awesome. Every now and then he strikes a chord with me. I completely relate to this idiocy.

If there's anything I think is nearly as asinine as religion, it's sports fanaticism...

You know, for a long time, I've wanted to write a satire piece on religion and football. I'm from… Continue

It's Over

This post was imported from Livejournal on 2008.07.18

It's official. America is a Theocracy.

Yesterday we lost the right to challenge executive-branch government spending. The Supreme Court ruled that we can't even challenge "faith-based initiatives." For 7 years, our joke of a president has been holding prayer breakfasts, faith-based lunches, and dinners with the leaders of every major denomination of America's Official Religion, Christianity™. The money… Continue

Pete Stark, I Salute You

This post was imported from Livejournal on 2008.07.18

I don't think many people realize how amazingly important it was that Pete Stark admitted his godlessness. It's a lot like the episode of Ellen when she "came out" on the show. It's completely unprecedented, and it opens the door for other politicians to do the same. There are atheist… Continue

I Hate This

This post was imported from Livejournal on 2008.07.17

I have a bad memory, but this is the best I can remember.

So today I went to lunch with a few people from work, and everything was going fine until the way home. It turned into a typical "Christian-who's-never-met-an-atheist" conversation. I was riding with two female co-workers, Mary, who is a Deist and Annie, a Christian. Mary mentioned something about her bad luck, and said it was a bad sign "if you believe in… Continue

This Is Infuriating

This post was imported from Livejournal on 2008.07.17

Today my wife and I went down to the license department at Parkway Place to get new plates. We waited in line for an hour or so, and went to our respective clerks. My clerk asked me if I wanted "the new God Bless America tag" or "the old one?" I said I'd actually rather have the Saturn V tag, which costs $50, but my dad worked on the Saturn V, and the proceeds go to the Saturn V Restoration Project. So I got that one. We… Continue

God? Loud Denials and a Few Shrugs

Atheists at Ground Zero

To the Editor:

I hope that the out-of-town proselytizers in Lower Manhattan who approach those upset by terrorism will discover some local secular pleasures and stop preying on New Yorkers (''Delivering the Gospel to Ground Zero's Streets,'' news article, Oct. 18). Maybe they will learn…

The Meat Thinks: On the Ineradicability of Religion; a Modest Proposal

“I used to think my brain was the most wonderful organ in the universe. Then I realized who was telling me this.”

Emo Phillips

(From a fictional exchange between two extraterrestrial intelligent machines, regarding the dominant life-form on Earth:)

“So…what does the thinking?”

“You’re not understanding, are you? The brain does the thinking. The meat.”

“Thinking meat! You’re asking me to believe in thinking meat.”

“Yes, thinking meat. …

Taco Bell Showdown!

Okay, maybe not a showdown, persay, but still awesome...

I went to Taco Bell today because I was hungry and wanted to try the new XXL Chalupa (for the record, it is fucking awesome).

Anyways, it was pretty busy. The store itself was pretty full (I was getting my food to go, though, so I wasn't looking for a seat). Luckily, there was only one guy in front of me. There was a 6-person family in front of him, but they had already started ordering when I got in line. 4 other… Continue
