This is still the most common excuse I get from agnostics and even some non-church going Christians.
They Don't Want To Be Wrong about God's Existence, so they are playing it safe, hoping that if there is really a God and an afterlife, they will be in for a place in Heaven.
They are thus living an Irrational Delusion.
For starters, how do they know that they are worshiping or believing in the correct God, there are hundreds (presently worshiped) and thousands of… Continue

We have all had that conversation with friends, family, and even in our own minds have pondered the validity of the "What if you go to Hell?" scenario. Continue
Images of devils, demons, exposed human flesh to flame, faces twisted in torturous poses, evil looking imps in observant reveries of delight. The overall themes being rejection, exile, physically unbearable pain, retribution, and guilt. Through many belief systems, Hell is a common thread that most agree upon.…

“The sins of the fathers shall be visited upon his sons unto the 7th generation”—Wording may change, depending on which of the hundreds of biblical conversions available.

Do we go directly to heaven or hell when we die?
This question is of no importance to readers in this community, but for Christians it should be an interrogative of great concern.
While it seems a straightforward query it seems that Christian scholars cannot provide a "yes" or "no" answer. Instead,… Continue

There has been some discussion about the topic of Hell over at Psychology Today recently. (I have a blog there by the way in case anyone's interested!) You might even say it's a hot topic! (Sorry.) Psychologist Nathan Heflick wrote about the psychological aspects of the subject… Continue

hell is a place of suffering and punishment for those who do wrong, even tho as long as you are saved nothing u can do can get you in hell.
Someone who rapes and murders people every night for 20 years straight before getting caught and and put in prison for 20 years. he gets out after serving his time, but within 3 years he goes right back in for killing 10 people. Then this time he is given the death sentence will go to hell right? he will pay for his crime for what he did and will be… Continue

Pastor Rob Bell, one of the new rising rock stars of Christianity, has stirred up a hornets’ nest with his book Love Wins. In today’s article by Cathy Lynn Grossman of USA TODAY, Bell exposes the new kinder, gentler Christianity that has emerged as a reaction to the hellfire and brimstone alternative offered by most evangelical writers. In his book, he turns conventional Christian theology on its… Continue

According to Gallup, as of May 2007, 81% of Americans believe in heaven, and 69% of people believe in hell (http://www.gallup.com/poll/1690/Religion.aspx#2). Which is… Continue

I have sometimes encountered Christians who argue that the concept of a fiery Hell was not part of Jesus' original teaching; rather that it was introduced some centuries later by Church theologians. For easy reference, I have collected the following.

Death to an Atheist
In most mythologies or belief structures the main goal of its design is to assure the believer that they may physically die but that is not the end of them. There is a concept of a soul, a living soul that will never cease to be. All these beliefs systems take away fear of death and replace it with a feeling of anticipation and acceptance.
Many believers of such creative fancies believe that life, physical life, is a lesser existence, and that worldly… Continue

From Not My God
Here in the Not My God penthouse, I focus on stories of atheists that are particularly difficult and moving for the purposes of illustration and because this obviously makes for a more interesting book. So if anyone out there thinks I cherry-pick the extremes, yes, I am, but that’s sort of the point.
I found this story on Dawkins’s Converts Corner.
“For many years I was a victim of… Continue

Just felt like wishing all my fellow A|N Members a joyous Samhain and one "hell"
of a night tonight. Even though my city/street is rather "dead"
on this holiday, I still enjoy the good memories I have of years past where I'd either go Trick Or Treating or scare the living piss outta other people who dare tred upon my doorstep. First they get Tricked into think I'm a lifeless decoration then after I do a low growling Metal voice shout, they get a Treat for not running away.… Continue

Really though. If God truly did exist, and truly wanted all of us to be aware of his presence it would be pretty easy. I mean he is omnipotent right? Yet, the biggest crime one can commit in reference to the Bible is denying the existence of the Holy Spirit. Its the one surefire ticket straight to Hell. All God would have to do is show up again like in the good old days, perform a few miracles and I would be satisfied. But unless that happens I'll… Continue

I started out watching The Root of All Evil on youtube tonight. When I got to the part where Dawkins is witnessing a church's plans to put together a Hell House, I had to stop watching, to think. Things just hit too close to home for me. I found a documentary following the creation and execution of a hell house, and rented it to watch. It brought back some memories, things I had tried to forget. I found myself breathing with great difficulty throughout the film. (If you aren't sure what a hell… Continue

Yet despite all that I have done for each and… Continue
