Pakistan: decline into barbarism?

Over the past months i have posted about Pakistan for several times. Especially the blasphemy laws caused and cause much trouble in this country.

The real question however is not if there is such a law and how to get rid of it but rather if such a law is backed by the people or not.

No matter what you think about such a law, if the people themselves want such a law, if the society that resides in a country is one that causes such laws then it is not the law that poses the main… Continue

Pakistan again: Doctor arrested for blasphemy

Following we have a demonstration of where stupidity in unison with religious laws can lead.

A doctor in Pakistan was arrested for blasphemy. What did that guy do?

Did he insult the "prophet" directly?

Did he make derogative remarks about Allah or Islam?

No. Far…

Major Turning Point!

Well that may be a little exaggeration but this week something happened that certainly adds (or ads) a new dimension to our secular battles. For the first time, a commercial enterprise is using a blasphemous theme in its marketing efforts. More importantly the marketing is targeted directly at those who are most susceptible to infection - children and adolescents! Take a look at this link:…

Ireland Reverts to the Good Auld Days

It seems that in the Republic of Ireland, a truly characteristic Irish law has been passed: viz.: to “defame” or poke fun at ANY religion is now “blasphemy”, and hence illegal!

I quote: "A person who publishes or utters blasphemous matter shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding 25,000 euro."

Furthermore, "a person publishes or utters blasphemous matter if (a) he or she publishes or utters matter… Continue

Atheist Ireland Publishes 25 Blasphemous Quotes (including some from Jesus!)

If I lived in Ireland right now, I couldn't legally say St. Patrick was responsible for a horrible crime: inflicting Christianity on the Emerald Isle. Image from Wikipedia.

Legislating Blasphemy

... or some such drivel. Very few of us would have much difficulty imagining such a commandment coming out of the Old Testament, and if I bothered to dig (which I won't!), I could probably find something which approximates that. Proclamations or laws of this sort are the product of autocratic thinking at the least, and dated thought which doesn't reflect a more sophisticated society, which embraces freedom of speech and… Continue

Blasphemy or the Truth

While I respect the right of any person to believe as they wish, I also believe that the right to speak our minds freely and without fear of reprisal, intimidation or sanction is a hallmark of Western democracy. We should not surrender our rights in order to provide uncertain security in the face of violent opposition to contrary opinions. Ben Franklin wrote, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety”.

There is… Continue

On the Blasphemy Challenge

Ok, I know I don't like getting into vocabulary wars, but I love language. I love language too much to let this keep going on.

Stop calling the Blasphemy Challenge the Blasphemy Challenge. Yes, I know what they mean, but please stop calling it the Blasphemy Challenge.

What the Blasphemy Challenge is is not blasphemy.

Blasphemy is the objectionable use of a religious name or practice.

On a side not: Heresy is teaching as religious doctrine something… Continue

Atheist Anniversary

I became an atheist one year ago. Wow, so much has happened in that time. I've reevaluated my stance on practically everything. I've re-mourned my lost ones who have died. I've purged my home of garbage. I've changed the language I use. I've begun to have pride in myself and in my brain. I've started to think critically and rationally. I've been exploring the world of science, without tons of "you're persecuting me" resentment getting in the way. I've laughed my head off at blasphemy. And I've… Continue

U.N. attempting to put a stop to criticizing of religion.

The U.N. is trying to make it a crime to criticize religion, and forcing member states to abide by that law, in violation of our own constitutional freedom of speech.

Their Myspace page will have an abundance of information. This is getting more serious than just philosophical discussion my friends.
