In between hacking homebrew D&D
variants together, tweaking the css for my profile page, and wishing I could afford Aion
, I was reminded of something I wanted to do a while ago. Well, months ago now. Maybe even the better part of a year. In fact, as I check it, apparently it's been more
than a year, which is slightly scary.
Anyway, it's been a long time since I wrote a song (mostly because it's just easier when you're a whiny, romantic religious… Continue

I knew today would be hard. The anniversary of 9/11 always sort of hangs like a dark cloud over my head, although this year seemed to be a little harder than most. Since my deconversion, my utter anger at the stupidity and violence committed in the name of religion is stronger. When I was a Christian, I saw the 9/11 attacks as a holy war and I was convinced I would eventually become a martyr for my side, and now although I still see it as a type of religiously-condoned war act, I can't help but… Continue

I've just had an encounter with some doorstepping Jehovah's at my dad's house. I sent them packing with my 'I'm an atheist and I'm not prepared to argue with you' speech. Then as I left the house my aunty (lives next door) and 1 of my cousins were on the step. The cousin (a pain in the arse if ever there was one) started asking about the Jehovah's to which I explained what I said. He and the aunty then started going on about how 1 day I'll realise the error of my ways and come… Continue

My mom knows I'm an atheist and that I'm writing a book about her scandalous cult-leading mother. She's bothered by the first and okay with the second. We ended up in a really constructive conversation last night about religious extremism. I told her that I'm planning on marketing my upcoming book to "moderate christians" because I think they need to wake up and take responsibility for the crazies in their flock. Oddly enough, she agrees. She's on the "leadership council" and "planning… Continue

Over the last few years my grandmother-in-law’s memory has been slipping away from her, but has been more of an inconvenience than a danger. At times, she seems like she might be a good natured, well loved, background character in a sitcom about senior citizens. Convinced the cat has run away, stolen by the neighbor, or met a horrific end, every few minutes, she queries anyone in her eye-line as to the relative location of her nearly homebound… Continue

My mom and I are both going through therapy over her mother, my cult-leader grandma. So, tonight we had another conversation about religion, faith, faith-healing, Paul, Revelation, and the apocalypse. She told me about her sister's teeth being miraculously straightened, and that she believes in prayer. (My grandmother was a faith-healer, hence the heavy focus on this.) I told her that people of all different faiths can report miraculous healings, that they experience the sensation the Christian… Continue

My brother sent around his new dating site profile for me, sister and mom to review. And he's listed religion as "Atheist but not too serious about it." Woo-hoo! I'm not entirely alone! Now I gotta get back in touch with my college freshman cousin, since he's starting to doubt god belief :)
My mom is an apologist and huge fan of C.S. Lewis. BUT she's also done some early christian writings study, (from all christian sources) so she may have doubts starting to surface. Plus now two of… Continue

My wife and I come home today after class and find a package on the porch. Having not yet ordered my books for next quarter I was puzzled as it was addressed to me with a "care of" my Father. I inspected the box and saw "Christian Bookstores" plastered all over the sides. "Uh oh." I muttered.
Contained within along with an apologetic note for missing our wedding... a gift from my Uncle and Aunt on the east coast.
Personalized with our names and… Continue

Just a short one today, as we here at Rancho Taylor kick off End Week. I know, I know, many people call it Christmas or some other name. In my home, being as we are such a unique combination of people, I call it End Week. A celebration of another year closing and the promise of a new adventure in the year to come.
And this last year marks a huge milestone for my family. After 14 very long, very painful years of being care givers to elderly parents, we are now retired from that job.… Continue

We are all very excited about the upcoming holidays. Our presents are packed (and most of them shipped / delivered), the tree and lights are up and decorated, we've made cookies, and we've dove headfirst into the Winter Season media: The Grinch, Bing Crosby, Ultra Lounge, Muppet Christmas, etc.
The thing is, although all of this looks like the holiday we commonly… Continue

A while back, he was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. This is the second time. He had it several years ago, and it was successfully removed. They recently operated again, taking out a large portion of his intestine, once again thinking they had removed it. He has been in and out of the hospital a lot over the past few months. They just told him a few weeks ago that he has cancer in his brain, and throughout his body, and that he has about three months left.
I haven't seen my dad in ten… Continue

Hey everyone! How are you!?
Well, I survived my company. Barely. It was a near thing. They are expecting to return for xmas and have xmas dinner at my house.
I'm more than willing to take ideas for how to tell them they can't use our house as a hotel whenever they like. They are catholics. They are the most wasteful, vain, shallow people. They are selfish and self centered. And if they come to visit for the holidays, I think I will go ballistic.
Any suggestions? Please… Continue

Hey everyone! I haven't been around much lately because I've been doing a thorough cleaning of my house. Company will be here in a couple hours for a week or more. My husband's annual family reunion is Labor Day weekend and his sisters are staying with us. What fun!
Anyhoo, I've also been doing little things to improve Heaving Dead Cats
and hope to get some good blog posts up when company leaves. I should have some good material as… Continue

A conversation between my aunt and my grandmother went like this last Sunday morning upon the appearance of an article in the paper about non-religious summer camps;
G-ma (with shock); "Non-religious summer camps?!"
Aunt (derisively); "I bet they're teaching them that new-age crap"
It's so hard not to speak up in situations like this where people are blatantly and unapologetically bigoted. And that really is the problem. Many people in my… Continue

I recently got back into Irvine after a trip up through a large swath of NorCal to visit friends and family. I really have two sets of family up there; one is my "older brother" (met many moons ago through the Big Brother/Little Brother program) with his family in the Bay Area and the other is the group of actual genetic family in the Sacramento area.
I've mentioned being an Atheist and being a member of Atheists, Agnostics, and Rationalists at UC Irvine to my brother and his family,… Continue
