Flaming ovens and other holiday traditions

We are halfway through the end of the year holiday season and and so  we should take stock off all that we have learned. Lizzy and are are celebrating 14 months of her stubbornly suggesting that I should change my mind when I know I am perfectly right. I just picked up the meat thermometer which reminded me of an amusing incident a week or two ago.

We had gone to the farmer’s market at the 27th street domes and met the…

Rant: Anarchists

I was looking at the comments of a video on Youtube and I come across an anarchist with the typical anarchists argument meaningless rhetoric about taxes: "its extortion" and "its theft".

The stupid! It burns! These anarchists will call taxes theft and whine and wangst about the problems in our… Continue

Punishing the Many for the Crimes of a Few

I'm a student at the University of Mississippi and live in Stockard Hall, a residence hall of eleven floors that houses roughly 500 students. From the beginning of this year, a few idiots have had the bright idea of pulling fire alarms in the dead of the night. What that means is a mandatory evacuation of every student in the hall -- for me, a 20-flight trip down the stairs -- and waiting outside for the fire department to arrive, search the building, and then lecture us for half an hour about… Continue

Wow, that was a close one!

A theist would say, "Thank god!"

I say, "Thanks to LOST!"

My satellite reception cut out last night. "No biggie", I thought, it'll probably be back on my morning." It wasn't. When I finished with my daily morning phone meeting, it was time to quickly get ready to leave... but one nagging thing: what was wrong with my satellite reception? LOST is on tonight and I don't want to take any chances.

I decided to take a quick look at the… Continue

"Somebody Up There Loves Me!"

At 2:30 AM on Friday, I sat watching the TV, unable to turn it off and go to bed. Embers had been blown from a rapidly moving brush fire into a mobile home community in Sylmar, Ca., and now I was watching horrified as random homes in the densely populated park began to go up. As I watched, scared and frantic residents scrambled to get what few belongings they could and got out. The police and fire department, trying to prevent destruction were then quite literally chased out of the park by the… Continue

Why Sam Harris is WRONG WRONG WRONG, Part 1

I'm splitting this blog into several parts in the interest in my getting *some* sleep at night. I think I should be able to maintain my logical flow from day to day, but I make no guarantees whatsoever.

First off, I would like to make it clear that my main objection with Sam Harris is not the intent of his book but the content, and the methodology. Speaking about how faith ends is not what atheists and the burgeoning athiestic community needs to be hearing right now. We've already… Continue
