Whether it's a well-known concept or not, the hypocrisy of modern Christians is startling. Well, not startling when you realize (to even their admittance) that they do not read their own Bible. But startling to us who have, and have gleaned from its pages some positive things.
Don't get me wrong, the Old Testament is worth being burned (and as a hard-core reader, who faints when the page of a book is torn, that's something for me to…

Once you've accepted Jesus into your heart, your next step is showing your obedience and symbolizing your rebirth through baptism. The Christian denominations in which I grew up believed that baptism was only valid as a personal decision. Some denominations practice infant baptism or sprinkling, but in the context of what I was taught that practice seems to have no significance whatsoever (except to… Continue

Getting saved through Jesus Christ and receiving the Holy Spirit sounds like it would be a really big deal. I mean, the sheer mechanics of opening up one's heart and having the Holy Spirit move in like a college kid moving into the dorms is difficult to wrap your head around. Oddly enough, Christians seem to think it requires nothing more than the ability to repeat phrases told to you by another person. This applies mainly to children who are too young to formulate a sentence based on the… Continue

Working on a line-by-line parody of the New Testament is a unique experience for me as an atheist and it's an interesting way of getting up close and personal with the contradictions and, well, bullshit, of the Bible. I was planning on posting several insights but here's one that requires it's own category: shitty miracles. Thus, Shitty Miracles (the first): The coin in the fish's mouth.
What is this miraculous evidence of Jesus's love?

I was indoctrinated into Protestant Christianity from birth and accepted Jesus as my Lord and savior at the ripe old age of four. I don't remember much about my childhood but I still remember that evening and the place of worship in Panama we called "The Home." It wasn't a formal church and I imagine it was more like what you would have seen in the Apostle Paul's day where believers gathered in homes to praise god together through song and prayer.
The Home was situated either… Continue

It's all true. We have to believe this story. From the mouth of a child. Buy the book. Support heaven and the blue-eyed Jesus. Why wouldn't you just believe? I mean, here's what the publisher says:
“This was a very down-to-earth, conservative, quote-unquote normal Midwestern family. We became fully convinced that this story was valid. And also that it was a great story that would just take off.”…

Hi, I’m Mark, I am 24 years old, I was born an Atheist like everyone else, but early on in childhood I was introduced to Christianity. I was never baptized or ‘saved’ as they so arrogantly state.
As far back as I can remember my Mother always went to church,…

Holy cow — the atheists are proselytizing! I unveil Connecticut Valley Atheists' latest offering to the Vernon Green and demonstrate how the myths of religion and Santa Claus teach believers to behave in order to earn a reward, while atheism offers the only path to true, unrewarded morality in this week's CVA Vlog.…

Turns out I'm not the only one who thinks that one of the great injustices of the Christian religion is its portrayal of Satan as The Greatest Evil, which isn't even warranted by biblical standards. This week, I read these two essays:

My seventh book, Life After Faith,
will be published in the next few weeks. Based on almost a half-century as an insider, it tells the story of my emergence from super-natural faith to practice a down-to-earth kind of "natural spirituality." This will not please extremists on either side of the divide!
Some atheists will throw garbage and some people of faith will throw prayers, but it's a personal story of leaving faith, ordination as a Protestant Minister… Continue
