The movie The Wizard of Oz, based off of L Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American classic. The story is also often used in social studies classes as an allegory to the Populist era of the late 1800s. Baum did not write Oz as an allegorical tale, but it fits quite well. The Wizard of Oz can also be used as an allegory to an Atheists shedding of religion and superstition, on the Atheist's road to self-discovery. I will use the…

A lot of politicians and congressional members have been making the headlines in some of the worst ways lately. Headline making behavior like writing treasonous sounding letters of hate and rebellion against diplomatic talks directly to Iranian leadership. Making the phrase "climate change" an… Continue

As far back as I can remember, I wasn't ever forced into religion. I never went to a Christian school and, save for a few months here and there whilst living with my parents, I was never made to go to church.
My family would always have pictures of the cliche assumption of what Jesus looked like and an abundance of crosses on any number of given surfaces around the house. A few members of the family are so devout that they pray before meals and celebrate Christmas in a manner other… Continue

I was chatting earlier with a fellow atheist Tony and we got talking about the origins of religion. We covered quite a swathe of topics, and I thought I'd like to preserve this exchange. It starts with him reply to someone else comment about atheism, communism and Marx.Travis
Karl Marx called religion "the opiate…

I’ve received some criticism regarding my recent concentration on politics and my neglect of religious, atheism, and science news. If you would indulge me, I would like take a moment to address these concerns

Not that anyone really cares that much, but i have decided its time to go to the cheapest clothing store around, get some checkered pants, some suspenders to help hold them up to my chest, a nice golfers cap, and i'm going to start walking even slower than i already do around town.
A small side note on things that i'm proud of at the age of 30:
1. i have been straight edge for 13 years, for those of you who don't know, it is complete abstinence from any substances that can… Continue

Heart and head hurt
too young to be feeling this old
too old in my head to be so young and ignored
crying myself a river
wah! wah! wah!
I thought of another line,
but I forgot it because I'm losing my mind
Ah, I've missed writing bad poetry
Here's another, just off the top of my noggin:
Blasted bitches trading gossip
at the elementary school
That one, there, with the green hat.
Gonna go and give her a slap

So, I guess this is to be my first blog post. I suppose I should tell a little bit more about myself than I put in the 'About Me' section of my profile.
The short version: I was born, I went to school, and now I go to work.
I'll skip the details of my childhood, except to say that I was raised Roman catholic. I tried to believe, but it didn't take. Then I had lots of arguments about going to church with my parents.
I've always been interested in math and… Continue
