For all their sanctimonious talk of pro-life, the Evangelical Right likes nothing better than a good war. When the bombs start falling and the bullets flying, the Christian Right becomes orgasmic at the prospect of death and destruction as many believe that war with North Korea will lead to Armageddon predicted the… Continue

What do collateral damage, friendly fire, special rendition and disposition matrix have in common? They are euphemisms for distasteful operations done by the military. For instance,… Continue

First of all, I want to direct your attention to Dennis Kelley's piece, "Wow. just...wow" (thanks, Dennis!). That is what has inspired me to write the following email to Congresswomen Marcia Fudge and Senator Sherrod Brown:
I want to draw your attention to the following video:

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK
Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley spoke with Airmen today at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK. During the question and answer period, an Airman asked a question to the Secretary regarding rights for Airmen who are atheist, agnostic, humanist, or freethinking.
Here is the question that was asked:
I support & follow ALL Air Force regulations protecting an Airman’s religious freedom.… Continue

So I am in the army and as many of you well know, even though religion is a tabboo subject it is still brought up. I am currently reading God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens and while I was reading it I had it taken from my hand by a fellow soldier who had some nasty comments to say about it. I don't really know where I want to go with this outside of complaining to people that probably know the struggle a little more. I usually don't bring up the fact that I'm athiest but most people… Continue

A nation can be governed by humanity and justice, but not an army. An army can be guided by maneuvering, but not a nation. When there are among civilian officials attached to the military commands those who do not know about the military strategy , if they are allowed to share in the responsibilities of the military leadership, then the chain of command will not be unified and the soldiers will become hesitant. - Zhang Yu

To start the New Year off right, I had to start it with fstdt.com . Fundies say the Darndest Things. This episode is all about Teh Gays, because DADT was FINALLY repealed, and the fundies are all OVER that shit. This has implications. Fundies have traditionally been pro-military: My Country: Love it or Leave It. So, maybe they'll leave, or maybe they'll stop supporting the military, or maybe, JUST MAYBE,… Continue

Something was brought to my attention a bit ago. Some Republican politician is trying to get a "Christian" prayer thing passed that says anything with a payer in the military has to be "Christian" or something along those lines...
Yet again another Goodie Two Shoes is trying to jack with the military because they think they can.
So, I have offered up my own prayer.....

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?” - Epicurus

However my first bunk mate was very religious. When he first saw that… Continue

Three weeks after saying he would release the pictures, President Obama is moving to prevent the press from obtaining the pictures of the confirmed acts of torture. The courts have already ruled that any “secrecy” considerations are insufficient to overrule the first amendment right to free press. Obama, ignoring the court and taking a play, from the Bush Administration’s playbook, said today he would try to block the release of the… Continue

MRFF Responds to Military's Denial that U.S. Troops are Proselytizing Muslims
By Chris Rodda
This is taken from Talk 2 Action and here is their web site.
As expected, the U.S. military quickly denied that the video released on Sunday by Al Jazeera is evidence that our troops proselytizing Muslims in Afghanistan, claiming that what was shown in the video was an isolated incident, and that the… Continue

Yes, there are atheists in fox holes. I served four years with Amphibious Squadron 6 out of Norfolk and Little Creek Virginia. I was forced when I joined to choose a religious denomination. I told them I didn't want one, but they told me I had better or else, so I chose Presbyterian, and now it's imprinted on my dog tags.
Here's a nice article from the Stars and Stripes titled "Military atheists want new rules on… Continue
