You Have To Be A Die Hard Cynic To Be Religious

You Have To Be A Die Hard Cynic To Be Religious

Most of my mornings are filled with top 40 hits of pop music as I commute to work, kids in tow. This radio station is a clear favorite for all of us with its variety, and usually I can ignore the music and let the kids enjoy a little be bopping before going to school. Recently though, we discovered that on Sunday mornings there is a half hour of…

Freethinking For Dummies Media Site

I'm hosting a site for atheist, skeptical and humanist audio and video clips on my personal site at So far there are only three things there. Amanda Knief's and Darrel Ray's speeches at the Midwest Humanist Conference, and an interview with Phil Plait, The Bad Astronomer, that I downloaded from somewhere.… Continue

Aliens exist?

When I posted on my other diary about the movie The Fourth Kind an atheist friend of mine was like, "Oh I'm never going to Nome, alienz will get me!"

I responded with an incredulous "how much pot do you smoke?" and a list of reasons I don't think it's a factual story any more than DIsney's Pocahantas was a factual story. He got pissed and started calling me a brainwashed idiot. All of a sudden I am dumb and "can't think" because I don't believe it was real. Then he said he was…

Who is the newest writer for Skeptical Inquirer? I AM!

Over the past few weeks I've been talking with Skeptical Inquirer Magazine about writing reviews for skeptics on their website. I'm elated to say the kinks have been worked out and it's official; I'm their voice in the dark (theater). This is a fantastic opportunity for me to write for people like me and I couldn't be more excited that it is with SI. It's more than a little embarassing how much I've been dancing around my house, the store, in bed, at the DMV, and in my car.

This is a… Continue

Even More Skeptical

Sometimes getting called out is the best thing that can happen to you. I wrote about being skeptical the other day and got some good comments that basically told me I did it wrong and wasn't nearly skeptical enough in my examples. So after mulling it all over carefully, and taking a nap, I finally figured out what I was trying to say in the first place. Be skeptical! But this time, I think I made my point more clearly...…

Be Skeptical

A friend of mine sent me a link to a news story this morning about Red Bull Energy Drink. For him, reading that article was enough to keep him from ever drinking Red Bull again. However, I was skeptical and did some research. I feel that being skeptical and checking information before simply believing it is important.

The Evasive God

If extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, then how is it that a single word which represents such an extraordinary claim has the ability to survive for such a long time without extraordinary evidence to support it’s implications? Simple, never clearly define the word to begin with, and allow it’s hosts to adapt it’s definition to the environment. Allow it’s authors to change the definition and characteristics of the word at their will. Allow it to be redefined over and over again… Continue
