Mythos, mythos everywhere

I was greatly amused last week to see that my husband pulled out "Baby's First Mythos" to read to our son at bedtime.

The kid may end up learning about Cthulhu before he learns about Jesus! Which is fine with me, because he will probably use that knowledge more in certain circles and at certain times in his life.

We also have a children's book about Noah's Ark. I don't object to it at all. He will probably need to know the Noah's Ark story by the time he reaches kindergarten,… Continue

This is NOT my childhood religion

I'm sick of all this faith, belief, blah blah blah that my mother seems to have taken up. Catholics never cared about that stuff until the Protestants made it fashionable, or even worse, patriotic. As long as we understood the authority of the clergy and attended Mass every Sunday, no questions were asked. We didn't have Christian lingo like the evangelicals. We didn't even discuss Jesus Christ outside of church. Did my mother ever read the Bible? Not until I moved out. When I read the Bible as… Continue

The curse of the chronically exhausted atheist

It's hot and I'm tired. I'm tired all the time, though. Even in perfect weather I don't have the energy to accomplish much.

The problem is, I can't start a conversation about it without pseudo-medicine inserting itself and getting in the way. My own PCP won't listen to me - he just tells me that chronic fatigue syndrome doesn't exist and shugs his shoulders when I ask him what other ideas he has. My previous doctor, same thing. Woo believers love to talk to me, but I'm not going to a… Continue

Why friendly atheists are important

I realized this while making friends in the chatroom - I've never made friends with another atheist before. I have several nonbelieving friends, including one outspoken atheist, but she and I aren't friends because of atheism. We're friends because of RPGs, and I learned about her worldview well after the fact.

In fact, even while she was discussing being an atheist, in her living room with three dogs, four cats, and our spouses, I didn't tell her I was, too. I couldn't relate to the… Continue

My real honest-to-goodness atheist blog

I now sympathize with all those people who venture to talk about atheism, and discover they have nothing to say. I have just become one of them.

I considered discussing atheism in http://zheshiwoying.blogspot.com/ . That's my parenting/adoption blog, and while I have tons to say about parenting and adoption, my audience there is varied and probably not interested in frank discussions about irreligion. (I need more atheist readers there. I… Continue
