The Gender Disparity in Atheism, How Can it Change?

It is clear to many members of the atheist internet blogosphere that there is a noticeable gender disparity among participants in atheist activities (fora, blogs, comments, readership) online. There are also indications that this discrepancy is continued offline as well, in self-identification on surveys and in participation in atheist community groups. There is a similar disproportion in popular published material and mainstream…

Atheist/feminist typology

So I'm doing some work with another member of A|N and we're doing some research on the intersection of gender, feminism and faithlessness. I've come up with a (very rough, very ugly) typology sort of piece about how feminists are religious (or not). It is based mostly on my own experiences and observations as well as some of the trends I've noticed in research about feminism and religion.

This very rough typology can be found as a google doc here:…

looking for poll data, would appreciate help

I'm looking for a poll I know I read about a few months (up to a year) ago about why people are leaving the church. It cited, among other topics, the treatments of gays and the treatment of women as reasons people are leaving religion.

If you find it, I will possibly love you forever.

Atheists as Outsiders

Don't know how many of you read the Friendly Atheist but a lovely piece about atheists as members of an "outsider" religious group was posted by Mike Clawson and I figured it couldn't hurt to post it other places so people could read it.…

So tonight was SANE's (Student Atheists and Non-religious at Elon) first meeting as a student organization with provisional status! yippee!

Mike, our fearless leader, graduated a semester early at the end of winter term so we also had elections and now have a new President, a VP, Secretary, Treasurer and Webmaster. Sadly I am none of these things but I will not let this interfere with how much I give to the group. (Even if they get tired of me ;) ) Mike'll be hanging around…

T. Paine

I'm currently taking American Literature 1 (from colonization to the Civil War) and had to read some Thomas Paine for class. Two excerpts from the Age of Reason, to be exact The First, sections 8 and 9. And in section 8 I found this quote:… Continue

Darwin: Comfort Style

Anyone get their Ray Comfort copy of On the Origin of Species today? They weren't handing it out at Elon so my brother, who goes to Virginia Tech, grabbed one for me for free. I'm not sure if it's a copy with or without the deleted chapters on biogeography but it does have Ray Comfort's foreword, which is what matters really. XD

I might review the foreword once I get… Continue

Under Sharia Law....

Under Sharia Law, virgins cannot be executed, so all those rabble-rousing 9 year old girls on death row for crimes against religion in Iran have to be raped first.

I Stumbled on this which led to… Continue

Doesn't it make you feel sick?

Really? Mutilating children and calling it exorcism? Where have I heard this before...

Everyday Atheists: a documentary in progress

So today I woke up bright and early (okay, 8:45am, but it's fall break people, be sympathetic) to watch Dr. Tom Arcaro of atheist survey fame film the round table discussion that will eventually become the meat of his documentary Everyday Atheists. Perhaps ten people… Continue

My university finally allowed our secular student organization to get started! S.A.N.E. (Student Atheists and Non-Religious of Elon) has its first meeting tomorrow night, I just saw a flier, quoting Thomas Paine of course, and got mad excited. What did I say last year? Birth-screaming before Turek came back, amen!

Of course I'll make sure everyone who's interested join Atheist Nexus. It's the least I can do.

Wish us luck :D

Right, right, right. I forgot to follow-up on Turek.

As the title says, I forgot to follow-up on Frank Turek, though this is largely because he's not done. Oh yes, you heard me, the man is coming back.

Frank, who is a rather attractive and charismatic middle-ager (from my youthful 19 yo point of view, mind you), spoke to a full house in the Business Center. There weren't enough seats so I, along with easily fifty others, sat on the floor and, having just come from frisbee practice, I was really hoping that no one noticed how… Continue
