The following is a way-too-long excerpt from "Exodus from Zion".
When I was 17 I had a rough, uncomfortable year. I took off one day shortly after buying my first car, a red '88 Ford Escort hatchback. I drove up to North Carolina to see Michael from Christian summer camp nineteen months earlier. My car broke down on the drive home a few days later and after walking and hitchhiking the rest of the way home, I discovered my mom had packed up my things. She told me I couldn't… Continue

Tee-hee! My blog is gaining popularity on the WWW. Which is kind of astonishing to me, really. I'm not used to the idea that random strangers want to hear what I have to say, and possibly debate/debunk it. It's thrilling and odd. But since I'm planning on publishing a religion-bashing book (as soon as I finish WRITING the damn thing) any extra awareness of my name, views, etc. is good.
Here's his crazy Mormon comment on… Continue

Latest in the series... In this week's installment I pretend to be a man to see if I'll be treated differently (DrASTIC) and the main topics of conversation are the existence of satan and the problem of suffering.

I was three years old when I asked Jesus to come into my heart. Kneeling beside my grandmother's bed, my cousin Jarrod's hand in mine, we bowed our heads and asked for salvation. Of course, I worried that it didn't stick. I "rededicated" myself to God at age 5, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 19. I was 6 the first time I led someone to Christ, a little 4 year old girl who was attending the same "Fall Festival" party at a church that I was. I tried to convert gay friends in high school, by telling them that… Continue

One of my friends was raped by her brother this morning. I feel pretty damn useless. I mean, right after it happened when she texted me, there was stuff I could do. Like call 911 and get them out there, contact her boyfriend, advise her not to shower or bathe till she'd had the rape kit. But there's really NOTHING I can say that will make this situation suck any less.
I remember why I wished prayer was true now. Because I wanted to have something to offer when someone was in pain I… Continue

My blog Angie the Anti-Theist
now has the FIRST shiny new comment from a Christian. It's glorious - he acts snooty, tells me I'm arrogant, that I was a bad Christian, and that gawd hasn't given up on me yet.
Oh happy happy blog world!

The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book "Exodus from Zion".
Warning: This post contains graphic descriptions of abuse.
Outside our summer programs of VBS and choir, most of the time my siblings and I played with the other kids on our block. Ryan and Justin were my brother’s age. Unfortunately, Ryan was usually grounded due to his grades, and Justin was a bully. I remember once when Justin punched me in the side of my head and my brother beat him up… Continue

Come on over to Angie the Anti-Theist
where I muse on the good old fruits, and how an atheist doesn't need any ghosts to be joyful, peaceful, loving, kind, good, patient, gentle, and self-controlled. Faithful is another story.

I became an atheist one year ago. Wow, so much has happened in that time. I've reevaluated my stance on practically everything. I've re-mourned my lost ones who have died. I've purged my home of garbage. I've changed the language I use. I've begun to have pride in myself and in my brain. I've started to think critically and rationally. I've been exploring the world of science, without tons of "you're persecuting me" resentment getting in the way. I've laughed my head off at blasphemy. And I've… Continue

A guy I know from class approached me today on break. "Can I have your number to give my girlfriend? She needs someone to talk to." This guy had heard my story, which I've just started being open about in the past year. (This is a counseling/therapy group class.)
She called today and we talked for about an hour. I can see why he asked me in particular. So many things in her story were in mine. Molestation, physical violence from parents, biblical/spiritual abuse, abusive men, drug… Continue

My mom knows I'm an atheist and that I'm writing a book about her scandalous cult-leading mother. She's bothered by the first and okay with the second. We ended up in a really constructive conversation last night about religious extremism. I told her that I'm planning on marketing my upcoming book to "moderate christians" because I think they need to wake up and take responsibility for the crazies in their flock. Oddly enough, she agrees. She's on the "leadership council" and "planning… Continue

So I called my grandmother this morning to catch up. It was very early in her time zone and she probably wasn't wearing her hearing aid. Add that to the Alzheimers and the conversation was pretty funny.
Giggy: What are you up to?
Me: I'm writing my book, and trying to get an agent and a publisher
Giggy: Ooh-wee! That sounds fun. Now you know my favorite publisher is Chosen Books. They're Christian.
Me: They're not gonna want my book - it's not a Christian… Continue

My son is so cool. He's weird and brilliant and thinks sideways. He just does things that blow my mind on a regular basis. Like his latest imaginary game - cannibalism. He grabs at my cheek, then moves his hand to his mouth to "eat" my face. I have no idea where he gets it, as he is three and largely non-verbal. It just cracks me up.
He also looks at thing differently, and I mean that literally. Since he was a baby, when he plays with toy cars he lies down on his side, and wheels… Continue

My mom and I are both going through therapy over her mother, my cult-leader grandma. So, tonight we had another conversation about religion, faith, faith-healing, Paul, Revelation, and the apocalypse. She told me about her sister's teeth being miraculously straightened, and that she believes in prayer. (My grandmother was a faith-healer, hence the heavy focus on this.) I told her that people of all different faiths can report miraculous healings, that they experience the sensation the Christian… Continue
