Science Paper Publication solutions

This article from Nature Magazine talks about the latest solutions to the problems of publishing a scientific paper.

I found it interesting because I see money as such a limiting factor on scientific research as well as the publication process that is talked about in this article. People…

A memory that haunts me...

When I was 15, my parents saved enough money to send their oldest son across the ocean to their place of origin: Macedonia.

I have many memories of that trip, good and bad and horrible. I remember only two horrible memories and lots and lots of the other kinds of memories.

I want to tell whoever is listening about the horrible one that bothers me today.

I was 15 and very naive. In the middle or last half of my trip, I decided to go alone somewhere…

Boy! This brings back memories...

Sole survivor of Detroit Plane Crash

I watched that plane pass by me and my coworkers and then disappear behind some buildings and then fire and smoke. I didn't feel a thing.

Good Reasons for "Believing" in God - Dan Dennett, AAI 2007

His speech to the AAI in 2007 was (to use the philosopher's craft) is an entertaining, thought provoking, full of ambiguous meaning, touching on many ideas - especially other peoples' ideas.

Professor Dennett introduced the word "brights" and "super" and others. What! He created the words, brights and supers? No, he (or someone he borrowed from) added another meaning or two those words. He is using religion's long time practiced tools to "evolve" the human language into a more…

An interesting question...

Our law makers, our doctors, our artists, our engineers, and others make decisions every day without the complete information available on a topic. And the amount of information grows daily on any given topic. On TED:

Melissa Garren: The sea we’ve hardly seen is video I was watching when Melissa said something I have known for many years, but never had the thought I had when I was listening to her. The quote is between 30 to 45 seconds into the video which you can…

Do you remember this...

Another title to this blog might be: The first century politics of "Turn the other cheek"

Here is a link from a religious website to prove you can actually learn something from religious people:

It tells you all about it. I didn't read…

Religion's Word Games

Human language is much older than 5000 years old. For all we know, religion is about as old as old as human language. We can all agree that religion has had a very long time to influence the evolution of human language. I say it is about time non-religious humans take control over the evolution of the human language.

I will give you just one example of what religion has done to our human language:

Think about the definition of love. When I say the word love, what am I talking…

How do you feel about today's state of the government and the politics that run it?

I feel disgusted. You probably do too.

I watched this week's episode of Bill Moyers and Company with their guest, Marty Kaplan (found here:

In it, Marty Kaplan said; "People say they know it's a con, just as they say that they are not being swayed by the ads for products that they see on television. If…

Cult and Religion compared.

Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, 11th Edition definition of cult:

It is a bit ambiguous, but I think you will see how it relates to the word religion.

Religious proof that atheists are "Christian"

This painful video is about 56 minutes long. For the great majority of it, Thunderf00t was sincerely trying to educate this Christian, Eric. Eric seemed to have a different goal which did not allow him to see what Thunderf00t was trying to convey. Then at then end, out of frustration, Thunderf00t ceased to be "Christian" and took the roll of fundie and showed by example what Eric was doing. Eric still did not see the light. But it was undeniable proof that Thunderf00t did unto his brother…

Richard Feynman's simple but far ranging idea...

I was looking at a list of videos I wanted to watch. At first, I was looking at them one by one and came across this title:

Richard Dawkins: Genius Of Darwin 1%3 Life, Darwin & Everything-lSYREfaZP1U

I couldn't figure out what the 1%3 meant in the title. Someone smarter than me could pick it off right away, but an average person may have a bit of trouble. So, for an average person to be as smart as Richard Feynman, we need a "trick". I will show you the illustration of…

Try this on for size:

Is it really a bad or useless thing to look for a utopia that we can realistically achieve? Or is it that our entire culture (theists and non-theists included) is under the theists' spell that anything other than God is bad? That man is corrupt and can ammount to nothing without God?

Is it reality to think we can do better than what we've done so far? You know, build on the shoulders of giants? Theists fight for the status quo or if there is to be change, for the change to take us…

I have a crazy idea.

When a man marries a woman, often, she takes on his last name or more recently a combination of his and her last names or in rarer instances, she keeps her own last name.

My idea fits man-woman, man-man, and woman-woman marriages.

Would you agree that a marriage is a sort of joining of two lives?

That thought led me to my crazy idea. In honor of the love shared and the long term commitment to each other, why not both partners take a completely new name that…

Can you tell me what a feeling is?

You can take any feeling, but here I will take the feeling of anger as an example. The next sentence is an everyday simple sentence:

He is angry.

You would be more accurate to say: He looks like I do when I'm angry.

You could say I have a sick feeling in my stomach when I am angry. Or, I have a tension headache when I am angry. Or, I shake like a leaf because of the adrenaline when I am angry. Or, I want to hurt him when I am angry.

Did you…
