To teach fables, myths, miracles and superstitions as fact is an outrageous thing

“Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fancies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing.”

~ Hypatia  (370 - 415 AD)

"it would be in the interests of those who believe in such nonsense as organised religion or creationism to accept the fact that religious books were written by men as a…

This Is How Private Prison Companies Make Millions Even When Crime Rates Fall

This Is How Private Prison Companies Make Millions Even When Crime Rates Fall

"The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation's largest owner of private prisons, has seen its revenue climb by more than 500 percent in the last two decades. And CCA wants to get much, much bigger: Last year, the company …

Challenge fundamentalist religious on public policies and practices

The challenge to fundamentalist religious must be thorough, in the present, and with teeth. The harm of those who use their beliefs based on superstitions injure people, flora and fauna, and the Earth. For individuals to put their confidence on legends of the ancients may bring them comfort and a purpose for being, however, we can not tolerate fundamentalists imposing their beliefs on others.

It isn't enough to confront the public policies and practices of…

From ignorance to Enlightenment

I, as so many others of my generation, grew up in tightly knit christian farming communities with little exposure to "other" races and religions. We were taught that Roman Catholics and Jews were of the devil and the only way to heaven was through the christ.

WW II changed all that. Strong, young men were swept out of the farming communities to go to war or to building wartime facilities. My father and uncles went away for the duration of the war, with the exception of one uncle who…

Debunkers

There are some special members of Atheist Nexus who work at debunking the bunk that exists in this world. Superstition controls many lives, and many suffer unnecessarily because of it.

One such person is BIPLAB DAS, a 34 year old male from West Bengal, India. His photos reveal the gross nature of practices common in his community. His worthy story deserves attention. We can supply him moral support and perhaps some can…

Religion puts society out of balance because of attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values

In this 21st century, society reflects misery and discontentment. The cause may spring from attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values founded on desires and expectations of family, education, and culture. Society may be systemically out of balance.

I experience  many men and women in our dangerous era who appear to adhere to a culture of violence, punishment, retribution, threats of damnation and hate-mongering.…

The atheist does not say that there is no God ...

“Atheism is without God. It does not assert no God. The atheist does not say that there is no God, but he says 'I know not what you mean by God. I am without the idea of God. The word God to me is a sound conveying no clear or distinct affirmation. I do not deny God, because I cannot deny that of which I have no conception, and the conception of which by its affirmer is so imperfect that he is unable to define it for me.”…

The Winter Solstice provides such a beautiful theme for the dark of winter.

The Winter Solstice provides such a beautiful theme for the dark of winter. The event happens at a specific time with the Earth tilting its north pole away from the sun in the north. Having Facebook friends in Australia, New Zealand and India, it is fun to share their summer solstice with them. Our family has a Yule log based on the Nordic tradition. Yule is the name of the old Winter Solstice festivals in Scandinavia. Winer Solstice provided a time of celebration around the …
