so the fact that I am an atheist finally came out at work. Waiting for the hammer to drop :(

mothafuckin preacher man kept pressing me. asking if I was "saved" I tried dancing around the subject as I have been the entire time, but one co-worker wouldn't drop it. kept asking me why I don't go to church yada yada yada. finally she's asks if I am an atheist. I'm not gonna lie about it cause anyone who knows me knows I am not ashamed of that (I wish the whole world were atheists) but I damn sure didn't want that coming out at work, I need my job. Honestly I'm kinda stressing, cause everyone at my job is a believer of some sort.ugh fml.

I do not know about NY law but in Connecticut unless you have a contract of employment you are an employee at will. That means you can be fired at the whim of the employer.

NY law may be different. There may be civil rights or state constitution issues.

Chances are status quo ante bellum.

call the aclu and tell them you are being harrased at work because of your religious views and see what they say.

then tell them your an atheist and watch them hang up.

harassment is harassment and if you can get the law on your side with this they will have a record of what happened which will make it easier to sue them for wrongful firing.

You cannot legally be fired for being an atheist in the United States. However, it is damn hard to prove that is why you were fired. Also, depending on your state, there may be an unconstitutional law that would allow them to fire you, in which case it would have to go to the supreme court to declare the state law unconstitutional. I am not aware of any state having such a law about hiring/firing atheists, but there are states that prevent atheist from achieving elected office, so I wouldn't be surprised.

@Alona Naga

When you changed your name, did you also go to "My Page" and change your address? If not, your real name will still show up in the address bar on your profile page. Though it doesn't seem to matter in my experience. Even after changing my name, a Google search for my real name takes you straight to my Atheist Nexus discussions page.

Could you really lose your job because you're an atheist?  I knew the US was bad but that's ridiculous.  Surely grounds for unfair dismissal if you did.  Anyway, I hope you don't.

It's a fucked up world when people look at atheists as if we're crazy for not believing in magical beings.

@booklover:I changed my name on this site specifically so that if someone from my job googles me this page does not come up, and if you are not a friend of one of my friends or my friend you can't see my wall on facebook. Outside of work I'll talk religion all day but at work I don't want that shit coming up.

@Chris:I live in NYC. I used to live in the south so I know how it is down there, and yes people do care less about religion up here...on the surface...but when you really look around just as in the south there is a church on damn near every block and NYC has large spanish and muslim communities, and just about everyone I work with is puerto rican or dominican. Do I even need to say anymore?

Are you in the south?  I see that kinda stuff here in S GA but not nearly as prevalently farther north.  Things are noticeably better even just slightly north like in TN in my experience.
