At the site I've been watching episodes of Family Guy and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, when I discovered a forum and review section. The question is always asked, "Why do all good shows get cancelled?"

Because they are too good, I thought. Then it occurred to me that it actually makes sense. The commercial value of a television show is not how good it is, but it's ability to either barely keep an audience from changing the channel, or barely be good enough so the audience doesn't forget the advertising.

I wondered about the pilot episodes of shows that never aired. Programs on television of socially redeemable quality or true educational value probably never got picked up by a network or sponsored by anyone.

The era of television exposure from 1930's onward set the tone for our values. Look at the balance of funding in public education between science and sports and between education programs that may create new competitors in the marketplace, or debt-loaded laboring consumers of mass-produced products.

Generations grew up on television, and eight years ago elected George W. Bush. Seriously folks, WTF!

We are in serious trouble.

I haven't voluntarily watched anything but PBS in years. I don't have cable. I don't have satellite. Don't need them. Nobody has anything I absolutely must see. Even those who have interesting shows, like the Colbert Report or Countdown, aren't worth the monthly fees. Not when they're available through the Internet for free, without pirating them, no less!

It's not that I'm a terrible snob who only wants to see Masterpiece Theatre all the time. I just cant' stand stupid, which is what seems to be the majority of the content out there now. The Brady Bunch is starting to look intellectual next to what I've been subjugated to lately in restaurants and break rooms.

I hate today's television. What's with this "reality" craze??? I have no desire to watch dumb bimbos catfight over who gets a date with Flavor Flave, or any of that other crap! It makes me want to puke! Thank bob for the internet! I rarely watch TV at all.
