Canada: Muslim Posters In Subways, Gideons in the Schools and Creeping Albertan Theocrats

Things have been busy over at my blog.  Here's a roundup of my most recent posts.

Toronto transit authorities refuse to take down Muslim ad

Well, it's the war of the subway signs again, this time in Toronto. Well it's big news for the Toronto Sun anyway.

Extra Security as Ontario School District Votes Whether to Allow Di...

The Bluewater District School Board in southern Ontario apparently feels so threatened by extreme Christians that they are requesting extra security for tonight's vote on whether to allow the handing out of free Bibles to school children by the Gideons.

The Wild Rose of Alberta (Even Creepier Creeping Theocrats?)

Until yesterday I'll admit that I never even heard of the Alberta (the Texas of Canada) Wildrose Party.  But I caught a CBC news report about how the party is actually leading in the polls for the April 23rd general election.  In fact, they're well on their way to a majority.  The Conservative party has had an uninterrupted rule over the province for over four decades.

They've got some pretty scary candidates.  Make the current government look more pro-science and less creepy religious.

Thanks Brent.

Some of this is starting to come back to me.  I remember Preston Manning.

@ Godless Poutine: Social Credit was a right-wing movement popular mostly in Western Canada during the 30s. SoCreds, as they were called, dominated Alberta politics for a good 30-40 years; they were so moralistic, you couldn't even drink a beer while you were in Alberta airspace!

They were led in Alberta by Ernest Manning, the father of Preston Manning, who led the revival of SoCreds, the Reform Party, which wound up merging into today's Canadian Conservative Party (remember Stockwell Day and the current PM, Stephen Harper?).

Here's a couple of Wikipedia articles:

I wrote to all the trustees when I first heard the news of a vote and gave them my support for the ban. I also said if they were threatened into changing their vote, that the Church of the FSM is ready with material for distribution to all the children too. Maybe that is why they stuck with their original voting...... The power of the FSM!!!!!!!

Looks like it's the old Social Credit Party gone bonkers in Alberta, if I remember what I've read about Canadian history.
