Hi all---after posting that blog, I was out of town for a week.  Thanks for your comments.  I really appreciate them.

To Katalyzt---I am not sure what you mean by your comment.  Religions, by and large, require faith in some type of supernatural being.  Faith, by its nature, is incompatible with reason.  If science is based on reason, I not see how we can marry the two.

Reason Master,

You ripped that scallop a new part. How can we even countenance the question without laughing?

How do the opposing fields of inquiry approach things. Religious institutions dictate world view, reality and morality. The greater the power of the institution the more draconic and insistent on obedience and blind submissive acceptance of their fiats. And their fiats are derived of ancient superstition promulgated by people who had very little knowledge of the natural world. What is the penalty for apostasy in Islam? How is it that the pope's utterances are infallible?

Hardly an environment conducive with rationalism I'd say. And anyone rational would say the same as I. Where religion was dominant science happened inspite of religion or by accident when looking for evidence of divinity. Modern scientists who are devout compartmentalize the conflicting buggers.

Science looks at the natural world. It does not presuppose the nature of things without evidence, especially bad evidence! They have little requirements like experiments and repeatability and peer reviews. When contrary evidence is forthcoming they rework their conclusions. Not exactly like religion I'd say, in fact, the exact opposite.

Is science compatible with a firm belief that Mickey Mouse secretly controls the universe?

For the most part, I say no, from the religious standpoint, with the exception of maybe one or two universalist churches.  When they appear to be somewhat compatible from a religious standpoint again, religions are saying god was using science as a means to his/her/its end.  Not. To do this they would have to rewrite the bible or other similar religious writings. Of course, many interpret these writings anyway they please.  From the scientific standpoint, I don't think there are many legitimate scientists out there who would agree.

It depends on which religion and what claims are made by said religion.
