If I had a penny for every time a theist told me that on many occasions in history, atheism has been the cause of genocide...particularly Pol Pot, Hitler and Stalin.

I wrote a blog post about Hitler and Stalin in particular over at my blog: http://www.odd-innuendo.net. I won't bother reposting it here, as I would just be preaching to the choir.

I'm getting tired and frustrated. Maybe I need to take a break and do what I enjoy...photography and art...but then again, I just can't keep away from debate!

I think it is important to point out that when tyrants, or dictators, gain power, all ideology becomes moot. Stalin did not kill in the name of atheism, he killed in the name of Stalin. I don't really think we can blame Hitler's Christianity for the holocaust any more than we can blame his lust for expanding and holding power.
A tyrant will use whatever he finds in his toolbox to extend and hold control. I think Stalin killed a lot of atheists, and it isn't like a lot of Christians didn't pay the ultimate price during WW II.
If anybody accusses Hitler and the Nazis of being atheist, have them google "Nazi
belt buckles" to discover the delicious irony themselves.

It gets so frustrating when the person you are debating with starts attacking your intelligence! I'm so close to blocking his IP, but I think I'll just let him comment on my blog, and look like an idiot.

Thanks Mark, it's great to get support on this matter. I'm getting tired of ignorant people who use their interpretation of history to their advantage. It's the equivalent of them sticking their fingers in their ears and going "LALALALA".

I love it! I'm collecting quotes, and that is a great one! Thanks for sharing.

I still think that the quickest, most succinct answer to the "Pol Pot/Stalin was an atheist" attack is simply this quote from the Nobel prize winning physicist Steven Weinberg: “With or without [religion] you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, it takes religion.”
