When refuting that ridiculous notion that religion is a science who would be our heroes?

I was just pondering the above question when you hear people accusing non believers of having science as their religion. A patently ridiculous notion but I think it would be amusing to list our gods (heroes) and how the list is constantly growing or being eliminated as we learn more.

And is there a single book or even one pure science example?

So many heroes that we could be accused of worshipping or should that be honouring?

Aristotle,Socrates,Newton,Dawkins, Darwin, Hiitchens, Leakey,Tobias, Hawking,Einstein,Copernicus,Galileo, Curie,Higgs,Sagan, etc, etc, etc

This doesn't even come close to scratching the surface in my very un-educated reading and understanding.

I think it does however illustrate fully the ridiculous notion that religion is a science.

Each of the great minds above is being built upon all the time and quite often refuted completely as we discover more.

Compare that to Christianity or Islam whichare based on one book which is supposedly irrefutable.

I think that this is quite an amusing response to anybody who does suggest that religion is a science. What do you guys think?

Nicely put Pat.

The idea of then discussing the gods in science as a religion amuses me as it would be never ending and highlighting the ever changing nature of the field in the quest for understanding and enlightenment.  In religion an unchanging book (relatively) that may not be questioned. Idiotic.

Science has lots of questions, some of which may never be answered. Religion has all the answers, none of which may ever be questioned.

Loren says it for me. B. Fletcher offers good lab work. May I add to the list?

I agree whole heartedly with B. Fletcher.

My unconsidered response would be to tell the apologist to study their "science" book really, really closely and then use what they learned from it to build an airplane.  Then find a nice cliff, and take flight.

Thanks Loren. I fully agree however this more of an attempt to humorously point out the idiotic suggestion that science is a religion. Logic is rarely well received.

Alleging that religion is a science is laughable at best.  Religion starts with a conclusion then attempts to justify it.  Science starts with evidence and allows itself to be led where the evidence takes us.  Religion wants to insist that it is RIGHT, regardless.  Science corrects itself, throws out what doesn't work and adopts what does, though it also continues to scrutinize what it thinks it knows.  There is no method to religion; all it has are its holy books and the assertions ex cathedra of its leaders.  Science is almost wholly about method, about discipline, about trying to prove a new concept wrong before accepting it.

Religion is about what they want to be true.  Science is about what IS true.
