I am proud to be an Atheist and I enjoy  discussing various  topics  on A/N......I may  not believe in God  or all the  fables  in the  Old or New testament, but some of us do believe in traditions from our culture  unrelated  to any Theistic  belief.....Maybe  being  Jewish  is unique, because it is a rich culture with  a very long history as well as being a religious faith......I may  have  rejected the religious  part but  certain traditions are important to me  because  they define  who I am and  where  I came from....People  who have  roots in various  countries  of the world may  no longer  believe in their ancestral  religion  but  still are proud  of the culture  from which  they came......It defines  us.......Some traditions of a certain culture, many  may not agree with,  but it is important  to respect  them none the less....

Well I read  the entire  article did You?   It took me  90 minutes to read through the whole thing...I can tell most of you didn't because  the more  you read  the more the text  changes....So many  different  authors  with so many  interpretations....The bottom line is everyone  was trying to discredit the bible story, but always  seemed  to say  that  some  of it  was  exaggerated and some  seemed  true.....In other words  take  your  pick  in which interpretation you went to  believe.....The fact is, most  was an oral history  passed down  through the ages.....We all know  how that goes...All of them say there was  a Moses, even the Quran and  the New Testament mentions  Moses as the greatest  scholar  and teacher....I am sticking  with the Bible story minus  all the  miracles....The Hebrews  were slaves  and did build  the Pyramids.....Moses  did  lead them out of Egypt, although  how long  it took  is questionable....Moses  wrote  the Ten Commandments , not God...because  Moses  was a noted  scholar  of his day and  was quite  capable  of doing it......The so called  plagues probably  spanned  over  many years  as  natural  events, and was  condensed by the writers...The Canaanites probably  were the precursor to the Hebrews, and as nomads travelled  all over the middle east...The Hebrews  were made up of 12 tribes, named  after the 12 children of Jacob...so yes  Jacob  did exist...The descendants  of these 12 tribes was what made up the Nation of Israel..The truth is that it is so easy  to dispute  the bible  because  these  events all precede  Jesus....So  some facts have been embellished `The so called  miracles' but the story  is basically  true...If you choose  not to believe  then  that is your right....However  saying it is all totally false is quite a stretch... ..

Freethinker 31, the Bible is not history. Today the theist is the only one who says it is.

And I also agree with Pat. Luara's links are correct and so is the comments of Loren. Even though I am an ex-chirstian can you imagine how shocked I was to learn that they just made crap up? I first heard those words from Booklover (Mindy) but it is oh so true. 98% of the bible is just made up! That's what makes believers so scary!

Thank you for those articles, Luara!

I agree with Allan Perlman.

If the bible deserves ANY respect in any discipline, especially historical, I don't know about it.  From a literary point of view, certainly, there are tons of authors who cite the bible.  That doesn't make those authors smart; it just adds them to the list of those who have been fooled.

The bible deserves no rhythm.  Neither does the quran, the gita, or any other document that makes claims it can't back up, mostly because They Are Not True!!!

Pat/Luara...Hear, hear!  The Jews do have an interesting history, but the Torah (i.e., Bible's first 5 books) is not it.

Here's an article on ancient Jewish history.

FT31, the bibble is not a total  lie. Only about 98 %. It is a compilation of race myths. And by race, I don't mean the modern perception of that term. I mean the belief of ancient tribes that they were the true humans - Hittites, Egyptians, Sumerians, Caananites (think Israelis here), Babylonians, and Assyrians who all stole, plagiarized, and copied each other's "hero" stories and incorporated them into their cultural myths.

Start from scratch?! Go to Charles Darwin and work your way forward.

Well I guess if the Bible  is  a total lie, then everything in it is made up......Maybe Jesus  never  really  existed...maybe  Abraham, Isaac and Joseph   never  existed.....Heck the bible.is old  no one  can prove it...so lets  start  from scratch.....Where shall we start?...Oh shoot, we now  have to rewrite  all ancient  history..Who here  is willing to do that?....Please...
