What If You had to Dance the Polka to Get to Heaven?

Once again, I'm bringing Debunking Christianity, a website belonging to John Loftus to my blog. I am now a regular guest writer on John's site and proud to be part of his continuing dedication to debunking religion and its harmful effects on humankind.

This week, I wrote an article about the persistent belief in heaven and hell. Although often full of conflicting ideas about what these two places might be like, human's have carried the overpowering desire to believe in myths and fairy tales well into the 21st century. The myth about what happens after we die certainly prevails.

I hope you take the time to follow the link and leave a comment either on John's site or right here on my blog.

Cheers and happy debunking ...

I posted this wonderful Phillip Appleman poem elsewhere, but it's appropriate here so worth a rerun--

Gathering at the River

Is it

crossing over Jordan

to a city of light, archangels

ceaselessly trumpeting over

the heavenly choirs: perpetual Vivaldi,

jasper and endless topaz and amethyst,

the Sistine ceiling seven days a week,

the everlasting smirk

of perfection?

Is it

the river Styx,

darkness made visible, fire

that never stops: endless murder

too merciless to kill,

massacres on an endless loop,

the same old victims always

coming back for more?

Or is it the silky muck

of Wabash and Maumee, the skirr

and skim of blackbirds,

fields of Queen Anne’s lace

and bumblebees? Well,

go out once more, and feel

the crumble of dry loam,

fingers and soil slowly becoming

the same truth: there in the hand

is our kinship with oak, our bloodline

to cattle. Imagine

not eons of boredom or pain,

but honest earth-to-earth

and when our bodies rise again,

they will be wildflowers, then rabbits,

then wolves, singing a perfect love

to the beautiful, meaningless moon.

Well said!

Every time a fervent believer begins to expound upon the glories or the terrors of the next life, however, they can easily assume that no one will come back from the dead to vouch for their story.

... Wouldn’t it be just grand if the next time a believer started yammering about the details of life after death, a ghoul would immediately appear discrediting their erroneous tale.

“You’re wrong and furthermore, you’re an idiot,” says the ghoul. “Life after death isn’t anything like the senseless shit that you’ve been spewing. It’s a great black hole where once entered, you dance the polka forever and only those who love the polka can join us. The rest of the polka deniers are forced to listen to polka music while picking up all the dog poop they refused to pick up while walking their dogs in their own damn neighborhoods. Such thoughtlessness will not go unpunished.” From the looks of many neighborhoods, a lot of people won’t be dancing the polka after they die.
