Back when I was still basically a Christian but starting to question things, we moved from AZ to AR. My daughter started kindergarten in a tiny school, and all was going well until she started having dreams about Satan. I had never told them about Satan, so to hear of her nightmares, in addition to her recent propensity for pointing out who was going to hell in certain TV shows, was alarming to me. Upon questioning her, I found out who was filling her head with such fears: The Bible Ladies. Every Thursday, for at least an hour, they took up valuable class time to teach the Bible. Even though I still basically believed in God, I knew this was wrong, so I called to speak to the principal. The conversation was quite convoluted, with some wild accusations on his part, but it basically consisted of me telling him that it was against the constitution, and him telling me that they could pull my child out of class and put her in the library or in his office (!). Then me telling him that I didn't want my child ostracized just so that the school could continue to do something unconstitutional. Then him telling me that if I didn't want to give him my name, I was just spineless. Then me saying that I wasn't going to give out my name, because I didn't want crosses burning on my lawn. Then him saying that without my name, he was going to act like the conversation never took place. Then me telling him I was going to see about that. After hanging up, I called the Arkansas ACLU and explained the situation. They put me through to Rita Spillenger, the head of the AR ACLU, who said she would take care of the issue. A half hour later, she called back to say that they were going to have a letter from the school within a week saying the Bible Ladies were no longer allowed to visit the school, or they were going to sue. Needless to say, the school chose the easy route, and the Bible Ladies came no more. According to my daughter, one of them had taken ill, and that's why they stopped coming to her class. Little did she know.

My SIL used to be one of those Bible ladies. She is a sweet, meek, little feminine thing, but oh, when she gets filled up with that holy spirit she's on fire for God. When she told me she was visiting schools to give religious education I was perturbed. When she told me what she was teaching those poor children I was horrified! She was teaching them all the death and destruction stuff from the Old Testament! I remember saying to her once, "But, L, isn't God supposed to be loving?" and she replied, "No he is not! He is a RIGHTEOUS God!" Scary! Glad you sorted it out.
