Earlier this year Pope Benedict XVI said, "hell is a place where sinners really do burn in an everlasting fire, and not just a religious symbol designed to galvanise the faithful". By contrast, in 1999 Pope John Paul II said hell was, "the ultimate consequence of sin itself. Rather than a place, hell indicates the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy".
According to the catholic dogma of papal infallibility, which states that by action of the Holy Spirit, the Pope is preserved from even the possibility of error when he solemnly declares a dogmatic teaching on faith, one would be forced to conclude that Pope John Paul II was right when he said hell wasn't a real place and Pope Benedict XVI was also right when he stated that, contrary to what the previous pope had said, hell was, after all, a real place indeed. So does this means hell was created sometime earlier this year?
