What would we talk about, if no one had invented god?

A famous old seminary story went along the lines of an old, gentle priest bitterly complaining about atheists to a younger, somewhat shocked priest. "The thing I can't stand about atheists is that they always want to talk about God."

Well for one thing I'd be working in the garden, as my partner wants, instead of typing on this keyboard. Thank god for God!

Well, no one is sitting around talking about being anti flat earth because its absurd and no one believes in a flat earth any more. If half of the population did believe in a flat earth, it would be heavily contested and there'd be discussion boards all over the place on it.

Religious "intellectuals" dont like talking about god because its boring, the discussion ends after the first sentence..."god exists"...thats it. end of story, mainly because their "existent god" doesnt interact, doesnt update his website or post tweets. He is lame ass. Atheists like to bring up that fact, and that is exceptionally tiresome, its like talking to a monsanto employee about how they are ruining the planet.

Oh, and add to that:

- The real causes of Earthquakes.

- The millions more donated to Haiti and other charitable causes (Because instead of "Please pray for [cause]" we'll be emailing and facebooking our friends to "Please donate a couple of dollars to [cause]."

To the Theist that hmmphs at us that for a bunch of people who don't believe in god(s), "You spend all your time talking about him/her/it/them/us." Yes, in much the same way that any oppressed people talks about their oppressors and how to end the oppression. I also don't like botulism. But if everyone I knew was infected by it I'd be discussing all sorts of ways to get rid of it.

On what else we'd have to talk about if no one had invented god(s):

- The latest advances in stem cell research.

- (If in school) Evolution.

- Our fun filled weekend with ALL of our friends (because none of them had to stop to go to church Sunday morning).

- The last time there was a war, like two or three centuries ago.

- How beautiful the World Trade Center is.

- Dr. Tiller's continued good works to the community.

- How AIDS in Africa is almost obliterated, thanks in large part to education and availability of condoms.

- Planned parenthood.

- Whether the new power plant in town will be Wind or Solar (since climate change would be way less of a debate than it is now).

- Realistic health reform.

- Realistic financial planning (vs. "God will provide").

- Wedding plans for my nephew and his boyfriend.

We would be talking about our super technology from science that religion had never suppressed in the first place.

Professor Einstein has proposed that no man can outrun a beam of light - how quaint!

Take Bromine for consistency.

If a fish fork is not provided, a salad fork may be used in place unless salad is served first.

After dinner conversation should pique interest but never dwell on the controversial.

A smoking jacket is always appropriate.

Incidentally it also shouldn't probably pass without comment that here we are talking about talking about the weather.

That's like meta-irony.

Actually understanding the weather beats even talking about it.

[geek] I have a confession. I've always wanted a barometer so I can see the air pressure. [/geek]

>I could never sit around talking about the weather.

By definition, those who pray to gods, are talking to the weather.

Well, any person of average intelligence knows damned well we'd talk about sex and politics!

As Glenn said free-will is a great topic: is it another god? Consciousness and sense of self are pretty good as well. That should keep me out of the garden a little longer. :-) Alex
